Universal charger, the EU finds agreement

An agreement was reached between the EU institutions on the legislative proposal to introduce a single USB-c type charger for mobile devices in the European Union. The new rules will affect mobile phones, tablets, e-readers, digital cameras and more. The rule marks a defeat for Apple, which has a different charger for its iPhones and some iPads, the Lightning cable, and which, together with some consumer associations, has fought fiercely against the adoption of a universal standard. The decree also introduces harmonized fast charging technology and the separation of the sale of chargers from that of electronic devices.

Parliament and its Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection have been calling for a common solution for shippers for many years, repeatedly calling on the Commission to act. The rule provides for the adoption of the universal charger by autumn 2024, announced the European Parliament.

However, the rule, contrary to what is required by legislators, is not valid for portable computers, for which adoption is postponed to an unspecified “second phase”.
