UPC Plans to Launch Medical Degree Intensive in Technology Knowledge in Terrassa

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) has approved the project proposed by rector Daniel Crespo to introduce a medical degree with a focus on technology knowledge in Terrassa. This initiative, which aims to admit 50 students and commence classes in the 2026-2027 academic year, would make UPC the first Spanish polytechnic university to venture into the healthcare field. While there are already two campuses in Europe offering similar programs, several key elements such as the study plan, location, financing partners, laboratories, and necessary authorizations are still pending.

The rector highlighted the importance of the future need for doctors and mentioned ongoing discussions with the Terrassa city council to identify a suitable building for the new faculty. Additionally, a collaboration with the Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa has been established to ensure future students have access to internships. Crespo also addressed concerns about the use of public resources by private universities for healthcare training and hinted at changes for existing programs in the city.

Despite the exciting prospects of this new medical degree program, several regulatory hurdles including approvals from the Generalitat, AQU, and the Ministry of Sciences and Universities must be obtained. The project will also undergo evaluation by the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia, which oversees the 12 Catalan campuses hosting medical studies. Stay tuned for more updates on this innovative initiative at UPC.
