GOAL by the Environmental Protection Agency (Epa) to the release in the United States of genetically modified mosquitoes with a specific goal: to curb the spread of diseases transmitted by these insects, such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever. After years of struggles for regulatory approval and protests by citizens, in fact, at the end of April, Oxitec – a British private company financed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – obtained permission to free the insects in the Florida Keys, an archipelago of islands that extends in the south-east of the USA, off Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
