Vaccinated most at risk of serious forms of Covid: this is who they are

by admin

The Covid vaccine, as with all vaccinations, it does not protect vaccinated people 100%. However, we know that those who have completed the vaccination cycle are 88% protected against infection, 94% from hospitalization, 97% from admission to intensive care and 96% from death due to the virus (data: Iss ).

It is therefore possible that they will occur infections even among vaccinated people, and this appears even more true as the number of people vaccinated increases. As explained by the ISS, which clarified the “contagion paradox” among the vaccinated,

If vaccinations in the population reach high levels of coverage, the paradoxical effect occurs that the absolute number of infections, hospitalizations and deaths can be similar between vaccinated and unvaccinated. In these cases, however, the incidence (understood as the ratio between the number of cases and the population) is about ten times lower in vaccinated than in unvaccinated. These numbers, if read correctly, therefore, reaffirm how effective vaccination is

.

Having made this necessary premise, there are some people who, even if vaccinated with two doses, are more likely to get serious illnesses of Covid-19 in case they contract the infection. The data comes from research conducted in Israel. Here’s what emerged.

Those vaccinated are at risk of becoming seriously ill even with two doses

Who is most likely to develop severe Covid-19 even if fully vaccinated? A research conducted by a team of Israeli doctors led by Prof. Tal Brosh, head of the Infectious Diseases Unit at Samson Assuta Ashdod Hospital, tries to answer this question. The researchers studied 152 patients fully vaccinated from 17 hospitals that caught Covid more than 7 days after receiving the second dose of vaccine and were hospitalized.

The number of people examined is small as vaccinated people rarely contract the virus in a severe form.

The main finding that emerged from the research is that almost all patients (the 96%) had comorbilità, explains Dr. Brosh at the Jerusalem Post. Heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, dementia, cancer or other health problems. It’s not about healthy people, then.

In particular the 71% suffered from hypertension; 48% of diabetes; 27% of congestive heart failure, 24% of chronic kidney disease or chronic lung disease; 19% dementia; and 24% cancer. Only 6% had no underlying medical condition. Furthermore the study showed that 40% of patients were immunocompromised.

Of those who were hospitalized, 38 were mechanically ventilated or died.

Vaccine and contagion: who needs to be more careful

“If you are older and suffer from diseases and have many comorbidities or are immunocompromised you cannot assume that you will be well protected by the vaccineconcluded Dr. Brosh. “When the virus circulates a lot in the community you have to be very careful”.

The Istituto Superiore di Sanità stresses that the more the virus circulates, for example due to a non-optimal vaccination coverage in all age groups or because the restrictions and sanitation regulations are not respected, the greater the risk of the virus transmitted to subjects at risk of serious disease even if vaccinated, as well as favoring the appearance of new variants.
