Causes and origins

The causes of fibromyalgia are not yet known and, sadly, it is still under-diagnosed. In fact, many people, despite suffering from the same symptoms, do not recognize that they have it.
Furthermore, there is a lack of specific laboratory tests capable of diagnosing this terrible pathology.

It is hypothesized that there are several factors that trigger fibromyalgia, and these can be both internal and environmental in nature.
For example, there is likely to be a genetic predisposition. Or it is probable that at the origin of this pathology there are physical and psychological trauma, or viral infectious diseases.

Many scholars, for some time, have suggested that fibromyalgia is a disorder of the immune system and not of a nervous nature.

To confirm this hypothesis, there is a very recent study conducted by some experts from King’s College London and published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Essentially, these scientists injected antibodies collected from the blood of patients with fibromyalgia into mice.
The surprising result is that after this operation the mice began to have greater sensitivity to pain, muscle weakness and reduced motor skills.
On the other hand, when injecting antibodies from healthy people, these symptoms did not emerge.

As demonstrated by other researches, this confirms the hypothesis that it is the antibodies themselves that react incorrectly, creating problems for the organism.
Thanks to this discovery, therefore, even fibromyalgia could be cured with treatments similar to those envisaged for other autoimmune diseases. Further investigation and confirmation to support these studies are awaited.
