Virtual reality enters the Milan Science Museum

by admin

Forty years ago, the cinema housed in the Museum of Science in Milan, it closed its doors to make room for what is now the auditorium. Documentaries, short films and not only are now the protagonists of the museum named after Leonardo da Vinci, but this time they will be immersive and 360 °. Starting from February 12, the VR Zone will open every second weekend of the month: a virtual reality room, made possible also thanks to the partnership with Rai Cinema.

However, thinking of a classic cinema would be misleading, given that visitors will wear PicoG2 goggles and each of them will have a personalized experience, based on the way they decide to observe and follow the 360 ° films in which they will immerse themselves. Among the contents selected for this first phase there is Happy Birthdaydocumentary on the phenomenon of hikikomori co-produced by Rai Cinema; Being an astronaut, the first VR film shot in Space, which tells about the preparation of astronauts; And Vulcanopreviewed right at the museum (again in collaboration with Rai Cinema) and showing the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Fagradalsfjiall, which awakened in 2021 after 800 years of sleep.

“In this documentary we take advantage of what I think is the most amazing aspect of virtual reality: the teleportation effectwhich really gives you the feeling of being physically somewhere else – explained the director, Omar Rashid – Today it is possible to observe the mouth of the volcano from only 3 kilometers away, but when we filmed it, we were 50 meters away. And the spectators will have the opportunity to see something unrepeatable ”.

“Our goal is precisely to tell scientific, technological and other topics in the most engaging way possible: we aim to have a focus on society as well”, he explained Luca Roncella, Gaming & Digital manager of the museum named after Da Vinci, during the presentation. But isn’t it a bit paradoxical to go to a museum to wear virtual reality headsets, the experience of which is necessarily solitary? “In our case it is an enriched experience – explained Roncella – Not only because we are accompanied by personnel who are expert in this technology and trained on the themes of documentaries, but also because in some cases it will be possible integrate virtual reality with the visit to the areas of the museum that deal with the same themes “.

On the occasion of some special weekends, virtual activities will in fact be combined with guided tours of the exhibition sections linked to the themes of the films and meetings with experts. From this point of view, the VR Zone also has the goal of enhance the heritage of the Museum of Science and Technology and to join the mission of spreading a conscious use of digital languages and technologies.

After all, the Milanese museum has always been technologically advanced: it is the first Italian museum to have opened its own site in 1997 and today it is the only one in Italy to have a game specialist, as well as experiment in the field of augmented reality, podcasts and more still. From this point of view, virtual reality, which allows you to immerse yourself in any scenario to experience first-hand experiences, is just another frontier for the digital dissemination of culture.
