Virtual reality to help those affected by stroke: the IIT experimentation in Ferrara

by admin

A research project to test immersive virtual reality as a new rehabilitation tool for motor recovery of the arms in people affected by cerebrovascular stroke: this is the experiment that is carrying out the San Giorgio rehabilitation center in Ferrara in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa.

According to the researchers, “the advantages found are manifold”: from the possibility of proposing varied rehabilitation exercises and linked to specific settings (therefore less repetitive and boring for patients) to that of carry out rehabilitation at home, counting on the control of the doctor remotely. All this allows for one greater comfort for the patient and, at the same time, less attendance in the hospital environment, laying the foundations for future alternative solutions to face-to-face services.

In addition, this new technology allows the real-time measurement of movements during the exercises and the consequent possibility of quantitatively monitoring progress: the approach differs from the more traditional one because, thanks to common virtual reality viewers, allows you to immerse yourself in an immersive environment in which the patient can act actively instead of carrying out exercises through a screen, increasing the involvement and transfer of motor skills acquired to everyday life.

The purpose of the experimentation is to verify how and to what extent this intervention translates into a greater recovery of functionality of the limbs.
