On the day of its European debut, the new vivo X80 Pro introduces a number of innovations that make it the ideal tool for capturing photos, portraits or videos featuring cinematic effects. A top-of-the-range smartphone, embellished with a photographic system co-engineered with ZEISS, which summarizes all the technological capabilities of the Chinese manufacturer, highlighting the progress made in recent years. The four rear cameras, the latest version of the vivo V1 + imaging chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset associated with LPDDR5 (12GB) and UFS3.1 (256GB) memories, and then, again, the 6.78-inch AMOLED HDR10 + display 10-bit are just some of the hardware features, for an uncompromising product even in the suggested price of 1,299 euros. Not a little, but justified by the technical specifications and the multiple photographic features.
The smartphone market in 2022: manufacturers and brands to know
by Andrea Nepori
Let’s start from the photographic department, which is also the fulcrum of the collaboration with ZEISS: in addition to the inevitable 32 MP front camera (F / 2.45, 24mm), on the back we have a system composed of four cameras: the main one mounts a 50 MP GNV sensor (F / 1.57, 23mm) optimized to manage reflections and an optical image stabilization system (OIS) with Active Centering technology. It is also the only one that can count on 7 lenses, six of plastic and 1 of glass; then we have a 48 MP wide-angle camera with IMX598 sensor (F / 2.2, 14mm), an 8 MP periscope camera (equivalent to 125mm), OIS stabilized, with 5X optical zoom and Hyper-zoom up to 60x Hyper-zoom, and finally a 12 MP portrait camera with IMX663 sensor, (F / 1.85 50mm) with Gimbal stabilization, to facilitate the recording of smoother videos.
Among the innovations introduced with vivo X80 Pro stands out first of all the ZEISS Cinematic Video Bokeh function, which imitates the behavior of anamorphic cinema lenses by recreating (also thanks to the intervention of a dedicated algorithm) an oval blur in 2.39: 1 format for both videos and for the photos. Users also have the option to choose the normal bokeh video effect, which varies to suit the focal length, aperture, and shooting distance.
No problem even at night or in low light conditions, thanks to the ZEISS Superb Night Camera mode, which includes updated features such as Pure Night View, while the XDR Photo technology improves the photographic performance from the display and enhances the HDR effect by optimizing lighting, contrasts and tones to best reflect what the human eye sees. Another novelty is that the X80 Pro integrates AI Video Enhancement, which automatically chooses the correct mode for each shot, and Camera Panning, which uses an algorithm to create the motion bokeh effect.
To ensure high quality rendering, all X80 Pro camera lenses are equipped with the ZEISS T * coating which improves light transmission and helps reduce reflections such as flare and ghosting. The solution, usually used on professional lenses, employs a nanostructure over a hundred times smaller than a grain of sand which, once applied, significantly reduces reflections and returns greater sharpness, contrast and quality. To develop the smartphone lenses, Zeiss used the “digital twin” technique: the design of the new lenses takes place through the creation of a virtual model, thanks to which their performance can be simulated and thoroughly tested, reducing costs. and speeding up the work.
Also from the German house is the ZEISS Natural Color system, supported by the first AI Perception Engine of the X series which improves performance and facilitates the change of color and brightness during shooting. Thanks to it, the smartphone reproduces natural colors and automatically optimizes exposure and white balance. The possibility of adjusting the brightness of the tone is also very useful, for more realistic and natural images.
Returning to the hardware, X80 Pro manages the heat produced by the chipset with a vapor chamber cooling system, which allows it to maintain maximum performance even during intensive use, such as playing video games or recording videos.
The 4700 mAh battery recharges in just 36 minutes thanks to the 80 W FlashCharge charger, while a 50 W FlashCharge Wireless charger is also available. The 3D ultrasonic fingerprint reader, positioned under the screen, requires a single touch to register the first time, and then unlocks in just 0.2 seconds thanks to the 11.1 times larger recognition area than traditional in-display fingerprint readers.
Available from the end of June, the X80 Pro will be sold in Italy only in Cosmic Black color. There are no discounts at launch, which for now takes place without specific agreements with telephone operators, but the Xclusive Care package is included which provides for free Pick-Up, repair or replacement of the damaged screen in the first 6 months following the purchase and Video- free assistance.
