Volvo, direct integration with Google Assistant

by admin

News from Volvo: from March 21st, when Hakan Samuelsson will retire the company and will be replaced in the dual position of CEO and president by Jim Rowan, the manager who from 2012 to 2017 was part of the board of the high-tech appliance giant Dyson and who until 2020 had been CEO of it. Not only that: Volvo will always be the first car manufacturer to have direct integration between its cars and devices enabled for the Google Assistant service. The novelty is part of a common path already undertaken by Volvo and Google who thus decide to mark a new step forward in their collaboration. The direct integration will allow to obtain the best connection continuity between Google Assistant and Volvo cars, allowing to manage the car functions through voice commands given to home and mobile devices enabled for Google Assistant.

Mainly, by associating their Volvo with their personal Google account, customers will be able to communicate directly with Google on board their car and remotely set a series of functions, such as early heating on particularly cold days (or cooling it in those days). hot) or even the locking of the car doors.

For more delicate commands, such as unlocking the car, a two-factor authentication process will ensure that only authorized persons can hear or access the information requested at the right time. The feature will be made available progressively over the next few months to all Volvo drivers who have an Android-based infotainment system connected to their Volvo Cars app and a Google Assistant-enabled device, in selected areas where Google Assistant is available.

But that’s not all: Swedish carmaker Volvo Cars will introduce its unsupervised autonomous driving function Ride Pilot in the US state of California. Ride Pilot will only be made available to customers after it has passed Volvo’s rigorous testing and testing protocol, including validating the technology as safe for on-road use under a variety of different conditions. As part of this verification process, the company is already testing autonomous driving functionality on roads in Sweden together with Zenseact, and collecting data across Europe and the United States. In the middle of this year, the company, which is awaiting the necessary approvals, plans to begin testing on California roads, where the climate, traffic conditions and regulatory environment provide a favorable environment for the introduction of the autonomous driving.

Once it’s been verified as safe to use on the road, Ride Pilot is slated to be available as an add-on subscription on the company’s next electric SUV to be introduced later this year. In its next generation of cars, Volvo is setting a new safety standard, with wireless software updates combined with a state-of-the-art sensor setup.
