The main problem we face right now is our strength: the ability to adapt to change. If as humanity we have come this far, in fact, it is because we had the intelligence to adapt to the conditions that existed, to use technology to defend and protect ourselves: from heat, from cold, from bad weather, from disease. The history of humanity is a great story of how human ingenuity has enabled us to overcome difficulties. Except that now this adaptability can become a limit because if in the face of global warming, in the face of what is happening this summer between drought, melting glaciers and unbearable heat, we limit ourselves to turning on the air conditioning and going straight on, it will mean that we have not understood what is happening.
It is no coincidence, it is not an exception: it is a trend that has lasted for years. The climate is changing and the earth is becoming less and less hospitable. Air conditioning can help us sleep at night but it won’t make us reverse the trend (indeed, if anything, it makes it worse). That’s why scientists say: it’s time to take action, to open your eyes and change things. Which things? Capitalism, consumerism, dependence on oil of course. Without these changes all our individual gestures will be useless. But if individual gestures become collective, if we act with more care and respect for the planet starting from our neighborhood, from how we shop every day, those gestures will send a very powerful signal to those who have the responsibility to change the world.
Otherwise of this generation they will say that while the climate was going crazy we spent the summers on the jet skis as if nothing had happened.
