“The persistence of a worrying shortage of medical personnel for the 118 and for the territory and the persistence of the pandemic, lead us to insistently ask for immediate solutions to guarantee adequate health care for citizens throughout the Region. We are convinced that a concrete solution is to temporarily suspend the entrance tests to medicine and surgery ». This, in summary, is the motion presented by Giovanni Burtone, mayor of Militello in Val di Catania, and approved by the Anci Sicilia Regional Council.
According to estimates, 10 to 24,000 doctors will be missing in the next 4 years
«According to the estimates of Anaao-Assomed (Association that gathers senior doctors) – reads the motion – the national health system risks dealing with a deficit ranging from 10 thousand to 24 thousand white coats over a four-year period. The limited number, in all these years, has produced negative consequences for the university system and for the whole country, which already has a lower overall number of graduates than the rest of Europe, with evident negative repercussions in terms of competitiveness and capacity of innovation. A different and more meritocratic selection would be more equitable, inspired by the French model where, after a year (or two years), the career of individual students is assessed with a more selective “barrier” based on the real skills demonstrated by the students themselves “.
