In the wards the few hospitalized are for the most part no-vax. The stories of the doctors who questioned them about the choice to risk rather than immunize

It’s not just the numbers that say it. That in the hospital these days those who have not been vaccinated, or who have done so halfway, end up with overwhelming superiority. waiting for the second dose, tell the doctors of the wards. so throughout Italy, north, center and south (read Panebianco’s comment here).

Stories

The identikits of these can be overlapped in terms of details no-vax. There is a hard core of opposites who continue to reject anti-Covid preparations. For a basic hostility, fear, lack of trust and the suspicion that there are interests behind which they do not want to yield. Vaccinologists call them hesitant. But there is something more than hesitation here. A waterproof closing movement is intercepted, a phenomenon widespread in many countries.

Bad luck

Matteo Bassetti, chief infectious disease specialist of San Martino, reference center of the province of Genoa, makes the diary of the last few days: From May 1st to today, we had 6 deaths from Covid, 5 of which were not immunized, the sixth had just received the first injection and probably got infected the same day, the maximum of bad luck (read the vaccination trend here).

Genoa

Here are a couple of stories from San Martino. Seventy-five years old, married to a woman who is convinced no vax who has distanced him from the concept of prevention, to safeguard oneself and the community. Then a 72 year old: Gone in 5 days. When he arrived I asked him why he hadn’t joined an invitation that would save him. He looked at me with eyes full of resignation, remembers that patient Bassetti. Data

The data of the Istituto Superiore di Sanit support the experience of health professionals. In the period between 21 June and 4 July, 941 patients were hospitalized: 80 completely covered by double dose, 89 those who arrived halfway, the others not vaccinated. In intensive care, the differences are even more evident. In the same two-week period, 94 people needed these treatments: 4 were fully equipped (and 3 were over 80 years old), 10 had done half a cycle, the others all uncovered. It should be remembered: the effectiveness of anti Covid compounds of about 90%. Very high, but not total (read the updated data here).

Pisa

Francesco Menichetti, infectious diseases hospital-university company of Pisa, in recent days he has seen two new infected in the ward, both unvaccinated. Their motivations? The finished Covid, what is the use of putting stuff in the body. Or, I’m not old and even if I catch the virus, I don’t risk dying. We are concerned that the positives multiply. The health system currently has no pressure. Let’s hope this summer photograph doesn’t change.

Naples

Naples, the stories repeat themselves. Ivan Gentile, Federico II infectious disease: We have two no vax in serious condition, with severe pneumonia, one in intensive care, intubated. A few hours ago an 86-year-old man left. He did not feel in danger. He said it was enough to vaccinate family members to stay safe. He saw few people and believed he was in isolation. He got the virus from his nephew. The moral: no one, even if they do not leave the house and limit their contacts to the essentials, can feel like they are in an iron barrel. The caregiver who brings him the shopping is enough to infect him. Gentile sees no differences between the Covid of the previous waves and this, very often linked to the Delta variant: The patient has a very rapid worsening. From moderate, pneumonia suddenly becomes aggressive.

Varese

Francesco Dentali, head of internal medicine in Varese and president of Fadoi (federation of internist hospital management associations) still shaken by the memory of the tragic experience with the pandemic in the early months of 2020. Today there are 12 hospitalized patients, 90% not vaccinated or partially. The most serious – he says – is 50 years old, a foreigner residing in Italy, all positive in the family, all susceptible to Sars-CoV-2. They passed it between them. Now the situation is easily manageable, every day we see a slight rise in hospitalizations. The example of England must be a warning.
