Among them, deputies to the Hong Kong People’s Congress and members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference have asked for leave before the two sessions, which has sparked speculation that this time may become the two sessions with the largest number of absentees.

The National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference opened at 3:00 pm on March 4 in the Great Hall in Beijing and will close on the morning of March 10; the National People’s Congress of the Communist Party of China opened on March 5 at 9:00 am and will close on March 11.

Li Zhanshu, chairman of the CPC National People’s Congress, announced at the National People’s Congress on the 5th that 2,951 delegates should be present at this meeting, 2,790 were actually present, and 161 were absent. The CPPCC meeting that opened the day before was supposed to have 2,157 members, 1,988 were actually present, and 169 were absent.

On the whole, a total of 330 deputies and CPPCC members were absent from the two sessions, the most in history.

Before the opening of the two sessions, deputies to the Hong Kong People’s Congress and members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference have asked for leave to be absent.

The Hong Kong Economic Journal said on the 4th that in the past, whenever someone took leave of absence from the two sessions, they would be questioned by relevant parties. However, as the outbreak in Hong Kong spirals out of control, Beijing does not mind them taking time off. Therefore, the number of Hong Kong People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference attending the two sessions this year has dropped sharply.

Allegedly, among the 18 members of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee in Hong Kong, only about 8 people went to Beijing to attend the two sessions.

In addition to the absence of Hong Kong representatives from the two sessions due to the epidemic, the reasons for the absence of hundreds of representatives from the mainland have also attracted public attention.

In addition, Yang Chuantang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, has not appeared in public since July 2021; Wang Zhengwei, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, who was absent from the Sixth Plenary Session last November, Bu Xiaolin, former chairman of the Inner Mongolian government, Chen Jining, the mayor of Beijing, and the former Ministry of Justice It is also questionable whether party secretary Yuan Shuhong and others will attend the two sessions.
