Yesterday, Saturday, activists from the “Energy Ban for Palestine” campaign disrupted a panel discussion hosted by BP’s chief economist, Spencer Dale, in London.

At the end of last October, the occupying state granted BP the rights to explore for gas off the coast of Israel, specifically west of the Leviathan field.

Emerging from a coalition of Palestinian organizations, workers and environmental activists, the campaign works with a team of researchers to analyze energy flows to Israel and identify choke points in its supply chain.

The founders of the “Energy Ban for Palestine” campaign define their movement as: “An anti-imperialist climate collective based in Britain, calling for an energy ban on Israel.”

The movement’s manifesto contains 3 declared goals: putting pressure on British politicians to demand a ceasefire.

Threatening business interests by making energy markets volatile.

Slogan for the Energy Ban for Palestine campaign

Disrupting imperialist militarism by denying access to the energy that fuels Israeli fighter planes, army tankers, military vehicles, and more.

The appearance of campaign members at the BP seminar in London was one of the forms of pressure exerted by them to achieve their goals.

Inspiration from 1973 and the Yemeni position

According to Jacobin magazine, the campaign is inspired by the Arab position in 1973.

The Arab oil embargo process began on October 15, 1973, when members of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (the Arab OPEC members, in addition to Egypt and Syria) announced an oil embargo “to push Western countries to force Israel to withdraw from the Arab territories occupied in the 1967 war.”

The campaign also said that it was inspired by the Yemeni humanitarian position that prevents ships related to Israel from crossing the Bab al-Mandab Strait area in the southern Red Sea.

Profits stained with Palestinian blood

In one of the video clips that was recorded during the appearance of campaign members in the panel discussion, a woman appears advancing to the podium, while saying: “BP funds colonial genocide. 30,000 Palestinians were killed at the hands of Israel. Shame on you for underestimating genocide, a month after the outbreak of The Israeli aggression against Gaza: Your company obtained the right to explore off the coast of Gaza, where people continue to be slaughtered by the Israelis, and you are making profits. Shame on you.

Security personnel intervened to remove the woman from the stage.

While another video shows a group of young men chanting in front of the company’s headquarters in London, saying: “Your profits are stained with the blood of the Palestinians,” and they all carried Palestinian flags.

Museum occupation

On Sunday, February 13, members of the campaign occupied the British Museum in the Bloomsbury district of London, to demand the end of its partnership with BP after Israel granted the energy company licenses to explore for gas off the coast of Gaza.

Some members of the campaign wrote their reasons for occupying the British Museum in the American magazine Jacobin, where they said: “On October 30, a few weeks after the Israeli genocidal attack on Gaza, Israel granted twelve licenses to explore for gas off… Gaza coast for BP and five other companies. BP, formerly the Anglo-Persian oil company, has a long history of imperialism in the Middle East and Africa. Although these gas reserves are located within Palestinian territorial waters, over the past few years Israel has opened fire on any Palestinian fishermen who venture beyond three nautical miles from the coast in an attempt to seize the area with the aim of stealing gas. While BP opportunistically uses Israel’s colonial genocide as a smokescreen for its profit-making ventures in the eastern Mediterranean, millions in Gaza are forced to queue for days on end for fuel to cook basic meals. Following the International Court of Justice’s ruling that there is a plausible case that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, BP’s acceptance of gas exploration licenses makes it complicit in colonial plunder and exposes it to legal challenges. “For us, BP was the natural first target of our ban campaign.”

They added: “Energy companies play a central role in promoting local arms production and fueling the Israeli imperialist militarism that kills and displaces Palestinians. Energy companies also enable Israel’s settler colonial expansion; Only recently, during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), the Israeli energy company NewMed committed to plans to build and operate renewable energy plants in Palestine and the occupied Golan region.

In Britain, many politicians have stakes and investments in energy companies that profit from Israel’s colonial genocide. Six MPs have shares in BP worth a combined value of nearly £120,000. In fact, Akshata Murty, the wife of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is a shareholder in her family-owned Infosys, which recently signed a £1.5 billion deal with BP. In order to fight for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the genocide of Palestinians, we recognize that we must stop the energy used to fuel Israeli imperial militarism, which will at the same time threaten the economic interests of the British political establishment that is based on dispossession. Arabs from their land.

Israel and energy

Israel consumes about 300,000 barrels per day of crude oil, which is the rate at which things have continued throughout the year 2023.

The state of Azerbaijan is the largest supplier of energy to Israel, as the occupying state imported $300 million in January.

It should be noted that the toll of the Israeli aggression on Gaza rose to 29,954 martyrs and 70,325 injured.
