70 years after the Polesine flood. Mattarella: “Remembering is duty, redemption and a sense of duty was born from so much pain”

«Seventy years have passed since the devastating flood of the Polesine, which broke out on the evening of November 14, 1951 with the breaking of the banks of the Po in Occhiobello and Canaro. It was a catastrophe: deaths, suffering, displaced by the tens of thousands, houses submerged by the uncontrolled flooding of the river, crops and farms destroyed in a very large area, first of all the province of Rovigo but partly also that of Venice ». This was stated in a statement by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

«The Republic was young, the Italian people – he underlined – had recently embarked on the path of reconstruction in freedom. The tragedy struck the people of the Polesine, who knew well poverty and sacrifices and who were suddenly forced into the hardest struggle for survival. The black and white images of the evacuees, the faces sculpted by pain and fear, touched the hearts of the Italians and left a profound mark, although those were the years in which hope was reborn ».

In the opinion of the head of state, “remembering today is a duty. Because those tribulations are fully part of the history of our Republic. We bow our heads in memory of the eighty-four occupants of the Frassinelle truck, adults and children, who were submerged by mud and water, without being able to receive the necessary help. From so much pain a ransom was born. Of those communities and of the whole of Italy. We remember the great movement of solidarity, in which the entire national community, from North to South, participated, and which also involved many countries ».

«The means of intervention – recalled Mattarella – were still weak. However, it was immediately understood, in that first great post-war calamity, that we have the precious resource constituted by the sense of community, by the availability to concrete help, by the civic sense and by the generosity of those who are in the field to provide aid. They are energies to cancel: the many families who did not return after the flood and the significant demographic decline compared to 1951 bear witness. of development. Today they look to the future with a desire for innovation and with a spirit of solidarity ”, concluded the President of the Republic.
