The video made by the director Martina Giannone was sponsored by the Municipality of Scicli to draw attention to the phenomenon of verbal harassment suffered on the street
Scicli (Ragusa) – “Stato di natura” is the title of the short film shot in Scicli by the director Martina Giannone and dedicated to the catcalling phenomenon. The term, born from the fusion of the English words cat (cat) and calling (to call), is used to indicate verbal harassment aimed mainly at women met on the street. It is a growing phenomenon that can affect many women by limiting their freedom to walk quietly and wear whatever they want. The video, sponsored by the Municipality of Scicli, was published on Youtube. “State of Nature” indirectly quotes Malèna by Giuseppe Tornatore and has as its protagonists some young women from Scicli who, in the scenic representation, experience the choice of walking alone in the street with discomfort, due to the sometimes vulgar appreciation that men can reserve them.
Catcalling is a phenomenon that should not be underestimated. Verbal violence is a prelude, at times, to a lack of respect for women even in the further dimension, the physical one. Hence the need to educate in non-stereotyped relationships between men and women. “To set the video in broad daylight – explain from the Municipality of Scicli – is a precise directorial choice: the man, at times, feels authorized to carry out verbal harassment even in the sunlight, without having to wait for the night. Today we do not have the right perception of the problem, underestimated and derided as a mere joke. In reality, behind such gratuitous appreciations, there is a male subculture, which in its worst degenerations determines phenomena of submission if not violence ”. The video ends with the names of the women killed in Italy in 2021. A list to which the word End must be put.
