A week in Dad to do the tampons – THE COMMENT

Student screening impossible in two days: the health care machine should suddenly engage the turbo

Twenty-four hours’ notice, moreover on the eve of a day of celebration, is too little to turn a good idea into something concrete. The initiative of screening among the students of the island, announced by the governor Christian Solinas in his (usual) night ordinance with which he postpones the return to school to Monday 10, appears destined to be wrecked. The health care machine, which accustomed us to in its sloth times, should suddenly engage the turbo and succeed in the miracle of finding in an amen space, people and above all swabs to carry out tests to a potential audience of 192 thousand students. A super hero feat.

And this enterprise should also be carried out in hot days marked by the peak of infections, in which Covid tests go away like hotcakes in pharmacies. For this reason, it is legitimate to say that the provision of the regional council, signed at the photo finish pending the decisions of the Government, makes water on all sides: it is late, short-sighted and leaves families in uncertainty.

The questions that arise among those who have a child of school age are these: what should we do? where can we go to swab? The answer is not there because at the moment it is absolute darkness on the organization of screening. Only in some small municipalities and in a portion of the south of the island the campaign has started and by Sunday those who wish will be able to undergo the test for free: the credit is due to mayors attentive to the evolution of infections and quick to take action together with the Local Health Authority and the didactic directions to ensure a safe return to school. But what makes the difference is the fact that they moved earlier and decided in advance with special ordinances that schools would remain closed today, January 7, in the knowledge that otherwise the risk of outbreaks would have been very high. A farsightedness that neither the national nor the regional government, which has queued up, have shown.

The consequence is that the days of today and tomorrow will become for many Sardinian students an extension of the Christmas holidays, a welcome but absolutely useless supplement in the fight against Covid. Because, in the absence of initiatives organized in the territories, the children will be white flies who, before returning to school, will swab, at least for two reasons: first of all because the cost would be borne by families and then because in pharmacies the stocks are exhausted in a moment. What to do then?

The way out is offered by the same ordinance of Solinas when he says that schools will restart in attendance on the 10th “if the conditions are right”. To determine these conditions can only be one data: the percentage of spread of the virus among students, which can be ascertained with an adequate screening campaign in which to involve the highest number of people possible, from Kindergarten children to high school students, throughout the island, in large cities and not just in a few and small towns.

The regional school office, says the director Francesco Feliziani, together with the didactic directions is ready to do its part, inviting families to undergo tests, in the certainty that it is the best choice to return to the classroom more serene. But to do things right you need time, two days between a holiday and a weekend are certainly not enough. For this reason, it would be preferable to postpone the start of face-to-face lessons again and return to Dad, at least for a week. Distance learning has well-known limits and we were under the illusion that it was a closed chapter. But it would be wrong not to recognize that during the pandemic it was a real lifeline. Now more than ever, with infections spreading and a variant, the Omicron, which spreads even with a sneeze, we must cling to this anchor. Then, starting to swim alone will be less scary.
