A year ago cruises in the world restarted with MSC

by admin

Almost exactly one year ago, on August 16, a cruise ship left in Italy, the first country in the world, after the lockdown from Covid-19 in early 2020. MSC Grandiosa, the company’s flagship, set sail from the port of Genoa. and the first cruise ship in the world to move after lockdown, thanks to the adoption of an innovative and rigorous health protocol. Developed by MSC together with a group of international experts – and with the fundamental contribution of the Italian authorities and institutions – the Protocol is still unsurpassed and has made a mark, globally, not only in the tourism sector.

In the last year MSC Cruises has sailed almost continuously, transporting over 100,000 cruise passengers all over the world – most of them in Italy – and gradually bringing into service an increasing number of ships. At the moment there are already 10 units in navigation, over half of the fleet, located between the Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Caribbean and the Red Sea. The remaining ships will return to service over the next few months.

In addition to representing – in the eyes of the whole world – a source of pride for Italy and for its illustrious seafaring tradition, the restart of cruises by MSC has made it possible to reactivate, again in the Peninsula, a very important tourist-economic driver that , in the pre-Covid era, it managed to guarantee over 120,000 jobs and generate a turnover of approximately 14 billion euros.

Also in the last year – the only cruise company in the world – MSC has started the construction of three new ships, has launched Explora Journeys, a new brand dedicated to the luxury segment that foresees the entry into the fleet of four units, has committed itself to the construction of new terminals in Italy and abroad, and has launched two new units: MSC Virtuosa and MSC Seashore. The latter, built by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, is the new flagship of the Company as well as the largest and most technologically advanced ship ever built in Italy. The construction of MSC Seashore required, by MSC, an investment of 1 billion euros which generated an economic impact on the Italian economy of more than 4 billion and guaranteed over 4,000 jobs in the last two years. The sister ship MSC Seascape, also under construction in Monfalcone, which is expected to be delivered in November 2021, is guaranteeing similar economic and employment impacts in Italy.

Last but not least, and again in terms of investments aimed, in particular, towards the environment and sustainability, MSC Cruises announced a month ago an important partnership with Fincantieri and Snam for the construction of the first ship in the world with “zero emissions” powered by hydrogen.
