Accounts of the Vajont Foundation: Padrin reassures about the future

Majority councilor Mirko Salvador asked for greater transparency. The mayor and president of the institution: “Now a new course, we focus on savings”

LONGARONE. Transparency of financial statements and communication of the Vajont Foundation under the magnifying glass of the city council on a Friday evening.

The majority director Mirko Salvador in fact, he presented a specific question on some critical issues of the institution. “There is a lack of general transparency at the foundation,” she said. “Let’s start with recent events, autumn 2021, in which the foundation did not make itself available to include its budget within the consolidation of the Municipality, also asking for a legal opinion which the Municipality had to deal with with an opposing opinion by committing three thousand euros. The balance sheet problem is long-standing since it is not possible to see the balance sheets from 2015 to 2020: to date, therefore, we do not know exactly what the foundation’s balance sheet is. Another problem are the economic transactions that over the years have caused the foundation to lose about 88 thousand euros, which today are in practice non-collectable credits. Have all these shortcomings been reported by the Municipality, which has the main stake in the Foundation, to the Court of Auditors? It seems absurd to me that by inertia the assets are affected by losing funds and that the Foundation then spends more money on legal opinions by making the Municipality spend public money for the legal counter opinion ».

“The 2020 budget of the foundation was finally presented”, replied the mayor and president of the Foundation, Robert Padrin, “There was only a delay that we had been warned of and therefore there were no reports to be made. As far as the legal opinion is concerned, it was almost a necessary act because the law on subsidiaries is a complex matter and it was better to investigate. It is true that the losses reported in the question have eroded the assets of the Foundation but now a new course has opened by focusing on the recovery of these figures where possible and on cost savings, first of all that of the staff of the institution “.

Salvador then pointed the finger at the procedure for appointing the new director. After the retirement of Giovanni De Lorenzi, in 2020, a call was announced which then became a manifestation of interest in choosing the successor. About a dozen candidates had presented themselves, but in the end the former accountant of the Mauro Carazzai Foundation was chosen.

“In the end, the board of directors decided that this was the ideal solution”, replied Padrin, “Carazzai is a transition figure who will have to manage the sixtieth anniversary of the Vajont and will expire with the current administrative mandate. Whoever comes after us will decide the future of the Foundation. However, soon there will be a meeting with the municipal councilors where the new director will answer all the economic questions posed and more ».

Finally Salvador, and also the minority, asked why and in what capacity De Lorenzi continues to have access and keys to the Foundation’s headquarters in the town hall. Padrin replied that it is a handover phase and that the new director will also explain this situation in detail.
