Received by the king and by Sánchez near Madrid
(ANSA) – MADRID, MAY 13 – The last contingent of the Spanish mission in Afghanistan, made up of 24 soldiers and two interpreters, has returned to the Torrejón de Ardoz air base, near Madrid. As shown by the images of Spanish public television, King Felipe VI, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles were waiting for them, as well as military leaders.
This is how Spain’s mission in Afghanistan ends after almost 20 years: about 27,000 soldiers took part and cost the lives of 102 soldiers, policemen and interpreters.
The return of the Spanish military comes after the President of the United States, Joe Biden, announced in April the decision to withdraw the last remaining troops in Afghanistan by 11 September 2021, the twentieth anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers. (HANDLE).
