A huge typhoon landed twice in Zhejiang Province, the eastern coastal region of China. Just a few days ago, China’s Henan Province was hit by severe floods.
According to official media reports, Typhoon Fireworks made landfall in Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province at 12:30 local time on Sunday (25th). At around 9:50 this morning, the “firework” landed again on the coast of Pinghu City, Jiaxing, Zhejiang. The maximum wind force near the center was 10 (strong tropical storm, 28 m/s) when it landed.
The typhoon brought heavy wind and rain to Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and other places. Sea, land, and air traffic was interrupted in parts of China’s east coast, and dozens of ships were evacuated from a busy port in southern Shanghai.
Uprooting of trees is common in Shanghai, and typhoons have also caused seawater intrusion and landslides in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Shaoxing, Zhoushan and other coastal areas of Zhejiang.
The Shanghai Railway Bureau stated that some of the high-speed rail lines will be suspended throughout the day on the 26th, including: the Shanghai-Nanjing section of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail (excluding Nanjing South), the Danyang-Shanghai section of the Shanghai-Nanjing intercity, and the Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed rail. All high-speed trains entering and leaving Shanghai from 19:00 on Sunday to 12:00 today are suspended.
According to the China Meteorological Observatory, the intensity of the “fireworks” has weakened and moved slowly after landing, and the impact of wind and rain on the Yangtze River Delta will be longer. The impact of the circulation is expected to last until the 29th.
Before the arrival of this typhoon, Henan Province in central China suffered historical floods. The flood caused extensive damage and at least 58 people died.
Emergency rescuers are still working day and night in Henan Province to rescue survivors and provide assistance to tens of millions of people affected by the flood.
Typhoon “Fireworks” may bring more torrential rain to the disaster-stricken areas in the next few days. Officials worry that this may hinder rescue and recovery efforts.
According to Reuters, the wind speed of the typhoon is as high as 137 km/h (85 mph). The Japan Meteorological Agency predicts that the storm will move to the west of Hangzhou City.
The China National Meteorological Center said that starting from Sunday, the typhoon will bring “long-term heavy rainfall.” The Meteorological Center also said that coastal areas “should guard against the combined effects of wind, rain and tides.”
According to Xinhua News Agency, relevant departments in Zhejiang Province have ordered the closure of schools, markets and enterprises.
In Shanghai, China’s largest city, some parks and museums have been closed.
This week, the floods in Henan Province have raised public questions about whether China’s major cities are adequately prepared to adequately respond to extreme weather events.
Extreme weather is caused by many factors, but experts say that climate change brought about by climate warming makes extreme weather events more likely.
With the typhoon “Fireworks” landing in China, another tropical storm may bring heavy rain and strong winds to the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
