A titanic effort. This is what the ASL / To4 management is doing to recruit medical personnel to cover shifts in hospital emergency rooms. It is not yet known whether and how many doctors will respond to the public notice that expires next September 3 aimed at establishing a ranking of urgent doctors, internists, pediatricians, surgeons, anesthetists and even a doctor expert in transfusion medicine, but in the meantime the management led by Stefano Scarpetta has activated agreements with the Local Health Authority of the City of Turin and with the City of Health and Science.
Moreover, the same regional councilor for health Luigi Icardi, meeting the representation of the first citizens of the ASL / To4, chaired by the mayor of Ciriè Loredana Devietti, had not denied the problem of the shortage of doctors, also extended to other health companies, but particularly accentuated in Canavese. Icardi had underlined that he had instructed the Commissioner of the Health Area of the Regional Crisis Unit to find doctors and nurses necessary to guarantee the continuity of the ASL / To4 emergency room service among the other Piedmontese health companies. The problem is serious. The Cuorgnè emergency room has been closed since the end of last October and although there are no contraindications determined by the pandemic, it cannot reopen due to the absence of staff. And on the territory, the absence of this service of 18 thousand passages a year (2019 data) generates criticism and forces to pour into the emergency rooms of Ivrea and Ciriè, also with reduced personnel who need the support of professionals from other health care companies to be able to guarantee shifts as even the doctors recruited by the private company that has a contract with the ASL are no longer sufficient. In January, just to give an idea of the situation, out of a staff of 60 urgent doctors to keep the ASL / To4 emergency rooms going, only 11 were employed doctors.
Six doctors aged between 29 and 64 participated in the first ASL / To4 call for work for the emergency services and all were recruited until the end of the year at the beginning of August. Immediately after Ferragosto, applications for open-ended competitions were closed: 10 places for emergency and urgent medicine and three for surgery. Yesterday, Thursday 26th, the deadlines for 10 indefinite positions in pediatrics expired. It is not known how many showed up, the procedures are underway. Today the competition for a position in transfusion medicine expires, on Monday that for 12 places in anesthesia and resuscitation and 7 as an internist. While waiting to understand how many questions there are (in recent years there have been at least fifteen competitions that have gone deserted) and to complete all the tests, however, the services must go on. Thus, new conventions were signed. Asl / To4 has signed an agreement with the City of Turin Asl for a value of 15 thousand euros, valid until the end of September. The signed agreement is broader con the City of Health and Science of Turin, worth 160 thousand euros and valid until the end of 2022. The agreement had already been activated for 2020 and continues on the same formula: doctors from the 118 service are available to cover extra shifts , outside their working hours, in Asl / To4.
