TERZO D’AQUILEIA. For eleven and a half years she lived in a vegetative state with minimal consciousness, then on Tuesday morning her heart stopped beating at the Suap of the Gemona hospital, where she had been hospitalized for a few months.

The life of Alessandra Clama, 37 years old from Terzo di Aquileia, had been marked by a very serious accident that occurred on 20 April 2010, when she lost control of her Fiat Punto and crashed into a plane tree while traveling along the 352 regional road to go to work, Bagolin bakery in Terzo di Aquileia. He was just 25 years old, he would have turned 26 the month following that tragic impact.

A situation that forced the family members, in particular the mother Donatella De Bernardi, has to roll up their sleeves to guarantee Alessandra, once out of the hospital, adequate therapy and assistance.

A very often uphill undertaking, but which Donatella has pursued without giving up, founding an association that bears the name of her daughter and which over time has become a point of reference for families struggling with children suffering from severe brain trauma.

The Alessandra Association, through fundraising and other initiatives, has made it possible to help many people in the purchase of equipment for home care and physiotherapy, as well as the purchase of an apartment near the institute of physical medicine and rehabilitation Gervasutta in order to host brain-damaged patients under treatment and their families.

«They were hard years – admits the mother -, full of sacrifices, almost twelve years of struggle, but it was worth it. We gave Alessandra a peaceful life, doubling it, according to the doctors. And this underlines once more how fundamental a continuous stimulation is ».

Since February, his health conditions had made it necessary to be hospitalized, first in other structures and then at the Suap of Gemona.

«Alessandra was never left alone, I alternated – says the mother – with my other two children. The situation was difficult, but I found wonderful people in the hospital who helped me a lot to overcome the difficulties.

xxx And just as Ale got worse, I got the news that my first grandchild is about to be born: a fact that I read as a sign of hope ». The whole community of Terzo gathers around mother Donatella, father Giampietro and brothers Daniele and Davide.

“We are very saddened by this loss – says the mayor Giosualdo Quaini – and we thank the family and especially the mother for her stubbornness in raising awareness of the issue of disability”.

The funeral will be celebrated on Thursday 30 September in the church of Terzo d’Aquileia, at 2.30pm.

The family asks, instead of flowers, to donate any offers to the Alessandra onlus Association (Iban: IT02B0862263620012000107870).
