Yesterday’s strike by Amazon employees and outside companies represents an ancient innovation. On the one hand this is the first time in Italy for the global e-commerce giant, on the other hand it is the most traditional form of protest that the history of capitalism remembers. In a certain sense it is, in the relations between business and workers, the 21st century of online platforms that meets the 20th century of organized workers’ movements. From this point of view, it would be wrong to approach the story to identify who is wrong and who is right. The trade unions, which have tried to involve most of the 40,000 employees in the entire supply chain (between direct and indirect employees), require more rights and protections regarding the rhythms and workloads, the reduction of working hours rather than economic recognition. of work, the stabilization of employees with temporary or precarious contracts, greater safety at work.
