An attack reinvigorates the Iraqi premier – Zuhair al Jezairy

by admin

Two days after his assassination attempt, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al Kadhimi visited two places outside the Green Zone, a retirement home and the poor neighborhood of Sadr City, in the eastern quadrant of the capital Baghdad. With these two visits in a single day, the premier wanted to show that he is not afraid of his internal enemies.

The previous Sunday, the attackers had used two drones to bomb his home in the Green Zone around two in the morning.

Some observers call it an “unfinished coup”. In its modern history, Iraq has been the scene of eleven coups d’etat. But this was the first attempt since 2003.

The attack took place shortly after a protest around the Green Zone organized by pro-Iranian militias against the electoral results, which sanctioned their sharp decline in popularity and a drastic decrease in their representatives in parliament. The militias are clamoring for new elections.

Following the elections on 10 October, the main Islamic parties can be divided into three groups.

The main winner was the religious popular Muqtada al Sadr (with 73 seats out of 329). His attempt is to create an executive with the most voted coalitions. Six other parties gathered around former prime minister Nouri al Maliki, with 37 seats, aspire to the same political consensus, also extended to Kurds and Sunnis. The losers, mostly members of the militias, try to impose a status quo by violence.

The assassination attempt comes after two days of violent clashes between Iraqi security forces and demonstrators, two of whom were killed.

The leader of one of the militias, Qais al Khazali, visited the site of the protests and threatened revenge just six hours before the explosions that hit the premier’s home.

Al Kadhimi survived the attack, however he appeared tired. But as Iraqis say, “minor damage can have positive effects.” The premier has received extensive international and domestic support. US President Joe Biden called the attack a “terrorist attack”. The UN Security Council condemned him expressing support for Al Kadhimi. Iran also condemned the attack, while many Arab leaders sent him messages of solidarity. On the international level, most of the main actors condemned the attack. This domestic and international support strengthens his chances for another four years in office.

On the other hand, this attack is unlikely to mark the end of the current tensions, on the contrary it could set off a chain of events that risk intensifying the level of hostility in a country that has long suffered from a lack of stability.
