Angela Merkel leaves the Bundestag, whistles to the successor Laschet

by admin

Angela Merkel greets the German Parliament, and she does so with a programmatic speech, which challenges the future and sets the agenda of whoever will be the successor. First of all on the pandemic, and the absolute necessity of the vaccine: “It is clear that none of us vaccinated was a guinea pig, neither Scholz nor me,” said the chancellor speaking at the last session of the Bundestag legislature. The Social Democratic Vice-Chancellor to whom he refers, in recent days had ironically stated that, given that millions of people would “act as guinea pigs”, now the others will be able to get vaccinated with peace of mind.

But Merkel also took sides when she started talking about the upcoming vote. “These elections are special, because they take place in a difficult time. And it is not an indifferent fact who will govern this country ”, he explained, expressing, surprisingly, explicitly support for the Union candidate Armin Laschet, in view of the elections on 26 September. In a long passage of her speech, while it was loudly contested by several parliamentarians who rebelled, the chancellor went straight on repeating that the country cannot be entrusted to those who “do not exclude an alliance with Linke”.

“Citizens will have a choice in a few days: either a government that accepts Linke’s support with the SPD and the Greens, or at least does not exclude it,” Merkel said, referring to the far-left Linke party, “or a federal government led by CDU and CSU with Armin Laschet as chancellor – a federal government to guide our country into the future with moderation, ”he added in what was probably his last speech in the lower house of parliament.

Faced with the boos for support for Laschet, Merkel did not hesitate: “I have been in the Bundestag for 30 years, which is the heart of democracy: where, if not here, should these issues be discussed?” chancellor. Returning to the speech, Merkel wanted to emphasize that the direction that Germany will take after the vote will not be determined only “by foreign policy, NATO and Europe, it also affects economic and fiscal decisions that will also decide our jobs “. This is why, the Chancellor continued, “the best way is a government led by Laschet: because measure and the center are exactly what Germany needs”.
