Anorexia and bulimia. In the Belluno area the first cases at eleven

The average age of the stroke patients is lowered and the males increase. The Equal Opportunities Commission is committed to collaborating with schools

FELT. The average age of patients suffering from eating disorders, such as anorexia, bulimia and other disorders, which can also begin in the pre-adolescent phase, is lowered to eleven years. A disorder that mainly affects young women but which also shows growth among men. And that in the last period, perhaps also due to the effect of the lockdown that has exacerbated inner isolation in the most fragile personalities, sees the prevalence of bulimia (large binges followed by induced vomiting) compared to anorexia nervosa.

These are the elements highlighted by the psychologist of the provincial association Margherita, Isabella Maccagnan who yesterday, in concert with the councilor for social policies of the municipality of Feltre Giorgia Li Castri and with the president of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Patrizia Maria Milani, presented the Feltrine awareness initiative on the occasion of the prevention day for eating disorders.

An initiative that “left its mark”, as Councilor Li Castri said, similar to that for the day against violence against women. Red shoes for that occasion, purple bows for this, which appeared in all the places of passage between Feltre city and hamlets (all interested) to create social interest and reflections on a problem with respect to which, “we need to create community”.

An appeal promptly received by the Equal Opportunities Commission and by President Milani who has a direct and profitable line with schools. Together, the two representatives of the Municipality reiterated the need to “collaborate as much as possible with all the associations in the area to promote social inclusion projects, especially in this phase linked to the pandemic where there have been important repercussions on society”.

The Margherita association, chaired by Luisa Ciprian, has supported since its inception the first level center for diagnosis and treatment of Dca established in Feltre in 2014, and subsequently that of Belluno, with the “Noi per them” project which consists of support for parents of children with eating disorders.

“In this context, the diagnosis has been refined, thanks also to the network collaboration with doctors and pediatricians in the area, and this favors the early identification of the problem”, said psychologist Isabella Maccagnan, “even in those cases, such as bulimia nervosa, which compared to cases of anorexia are not documented until a few years later, because the patient remains normal weight. What we are witnessing, helping families, is the lowering of the average age, the increase in male patients and the prevalence of bulimia compared to anorexia “.

During 2020, the two DCA centers in Belluno and Feltre carried out a total of 52 first visits (7 males and 44 females), with a total of about one hundred people in charge and multidisciplinary teams made up of psychiatrist and psychologist and dietician, with the fundamental contribution of local doctors and paediatricians. –
