Antonio Lubrano, a failed sailor in a made-up Italy who always remains “at the service of the people”

Lucid, punctual, sharp as always. “I have had some ailments, things of age, on the other hand they are almost ninety”, jokes about Antonio Lubrano. Problems overcome, he swears, master and protagonist of journalism “at the service of the people” (he cares and continues to reiterate the concept) which marked an era and still does not stop writing, arguing against the evils of society, collecting satisfactions.

Born in Procida (“I’m proud of it”) he does not shy away from an all-round chat, recounting a very long career but above all the drive that has always moved him.

The story begins, in fact, in Procida. Land of sailors as was his family. “But my father – he says – did everything to dissuade me from following those footsteps, he told me: don’t do it, because you will never really enjoy a family”. He, almost out of pique, replied with a joke that sounded almost like a provocation: “All right, Dad. I’ll be a journalist ».

So at the age of 18, he just presented himself to the editorial office of Newspaper (Naples newspaper, which has nothing to do with the one founded later by Indro Montanelli) and shows off all the chutzpah talking to the editor-in-chief: “I want to do his job.” The answer: «Come to the printing shop for two hours every evening, you will start learning». It goes on like this for two years. In the meantime he goes to the pitches to do the usual ten lines on amateur football matches and also water polo, “because there were great champions in Procida”.

In the seventies he was hired on Rai, on Tg2 by the director Andrea Barbato, coming from Radio courier tv. «The head of the political editorial board – is his story – was looking for a journalist who … did not understand anything about politics. I was chosen and I began to interview the great politicians of the first Republic, from Andreotti to Craxi, from Fanfani to Spadolini. With my questions as a man in the street, I began to unhinge the traps and pitfalls of the politician. The public appreciated it very much ».

Then it will come Diogenes. But the real turning point comes when Angelo Guglielmi notices him and offers him to lead a new program. The title is based on «mi manda Picone», the 1983 film by Nanni Loy with Giancarlo Giannini. “Gugliemi proposed to me: Lubrano sent me. I was dumbfounded. I asked him: are you sure? Because it seemed presumptuous to me, a title with my surname ».

Guglielmi was really sure, so much so that that was the title. A cornerstone of service television was born. «The first year – continues the conductor – the response was lukewarm. From the second on, the program took off. And there came a time when it was impossible for me to go around the street, to go anywhere without someone stopping me and saying: forgive me, Dr. Lubrano, how can I solve this problem? ».

The key to the affirmation? “I believe it was my language. Those who taught me journalism have always told me: we are the link between events and the public. You must speak in such a way that whoever listens to you understands perfectly what you are saying ». The hallmark of success? Laughs, Lubrano: «I really think so. Perhaps together with my accent and my Neapolitan character I think it is reassuring ». A brand that has perpetuated itself with Raitre sent me.

Regrets? “Nobody. I was a special correspondent, I was also the director of Smiles and Songs, I have conducted successful broadcasts, always with the same intention that moved me as a boy: to intercept the needs of ordinary people and try to give answers to those who need them ».

The last book, for Castelvecchi publisher, is Italy made up. The story of “a land of absurdities and paradoxes”. The last shot? Against the electric scooters that invade everything: «Do you think it’s possible that today whoever walks along a sidewalk should feel almost a stranger? Many, many agree with me ».
