Antony Blinken landed in Shanghai to begin his official visit to China

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Shanghai on Wednesday to kick off his visit to China, with a focus on pressing Beijing for its support for Russia while maintaining stability in bilateral relations.

During his visit to China’s financial capital, Blinken is set to have meetings with students and businessmen before heading to the capital for discussions with the country’s leadership on Friday. Cooperation in various areas such as anti-narcotics, military communication, artificial intelligence, and strengthening ties between peoples will be on the agenda.

One of the key topics of discussion is expected to be the situation in Taiwan, with concerns about Chinese trade practices also likely to be raised. Blinken aims to emphasize the importance of managing disagreements between the US and China responsibly, while also seeking to stabilize relations between the two countries.

The visit comes after a summit between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in November, where Xi agreed to certain American requests such as resuming military contacts and controlling chemical precursors to fentanyl. A senior American official noted that the bilateral relationship is in a different moment compared to a year ago when it was at a historically low point.

On the other hand, Washington has raised questions about Beijing’s supply of industrial material and technology to Moscow, despite not providing military aid. Blinken has also reiterated concerns about Beijing’s treatment of the Uyghur minority, accusing China of carrying out a “genocide” against them in the western part of the country.

The visit follows the US Senate’s approval of a bill that would require Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok within nine months to avoid a ban in the US. Furthermore, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen recently criticized China’s support for certain industries, pointing to overcapacity issues that could impact the global market.

Blinken’s visit to China underscores the complex dynamics in the US-China relationship, as both countries navigate areas of cooperation and contention. The outcome of this visit may have broader implications for future interactions between the two global powers.
