Archaeological treasures between Piave and Ardo, the Municipality works on educational paths

by admin

BELLUNO. A small archaeological treasure emerged from the flood of the Piave caused by the Vaia storm. When the water has withdrawn into his bed, I’m tvisible ornate fragments of capitals and columns, friezes, pieces of the ancient city walls, let it slide into the Piave in the Napoleonic age, when many buildings were destroyed. Those stones have been cataloged and are ready to become an educational path inside the Lambioi river park.

The Municipality is working on it, which has also set its sights on Ardo valley: here, and in particular in the area of Buson Bus, the ancient village dating back to the Neolithic age will be rebuilt, whose traces have emerged through some archaeological excavations. “They will become two tourist and educational attractions,” explains the councilor for culture, Marco Perale.

In Lambioi the history of the city

On the evening of October 29th the Piave, swollen by the rain that had been falling incessantly for hours in the province, overcame the embankments at Lambioi and invaded the river park, taking away all the structures that had been built. When the water receded, all the devastation emerged, but together also important archaeological finds came to light, historic stones that had been buried for decades under the gravel of the river.

From the first days after the disaster had begun the inspections of the Municipality, Superintendence and Civil Engineers. In two months, eighty-nine stones that were part of the castle and the medieval walls of the city, destroyed in the Napoleonic age and dumped on the Piave bed, were surveyed. “Now those stones will be placed between the recreation area refurbished in Lambioi and the bailey bridge,” explains the councilor for culture, Marco Perale. “The goal is to build an educational path, with explanatory tables, which tells the story of our city”.

Among the finds there are fragments of the old medieval walls, capitals of destroyed churches, columns of palazzthe. Precious elements: “Only by knowing the past can one think of the future”, adds the commissioner – and historian – Perale.

The settlements at the Bus del Buson

If the stones that emerged in Lambioi after Vaia date back to the Middle Ages, they are the findings of the excavation campaigns carried out at the Bus del Buson are much older. They date back to the Neolithic and Eneolithic times, in a period between 4000 and 1500 BC. The excavations were carried out on the top of the Col del Buson, and have stopped for some years because studies on the finds are underway. But this year, precisely in the valley designed by the Ardo when the stream crossed it, the village found during excavations will be rebuilt. “A stony ground has emerged in which the archaeologists have glimpsed a village structured with kitchens, the sepulchral part, the defensive-military one and the area where the weapons were built”, explains the commissioner Perale. “There was a hut in the center.”

The village, continues Perale, is part of the culture in which Otzi, the man from Similaun, lived whose mummified corpse was found in Val Senales in 1991 and which is now exhibited in the archaeological museum of Bolzano. “We will contact the museum to start a collaboration, in light of the findings made in the Ardo valley”, continues Perale.

Fans of the history of the world and of mankind will be able to get to know one of our ancestors in Bolzano, while in Belluno they will be able to understand how he lived, in the reproduction of the village inhabited by his contemporaries.

The project

«We will rebuild the village thanks to a contribution we got from the Bim consortium», Adds the councilor for culture. «It will be set up in one of the clearings on the north side, not where it was found because there may be other excavations. We are also working with the Park to define the tables ».

Also in this case the project has a double value: didactic, but also tourist, because the Bus del Buson, already known as a naturalistic jewel, can also be promoted for its historical and archaeological value. –
