Arsenal defeats Newcastle 4-1 to continue chasing Liverpool and Manchester City in the English Premier League

Arsenal continued its chase for the top two in the English Premier League in the title battle with a huge 4-1 victory over struggling visitors Newcastle United at the bustling Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

An own goal from Sven Botman and a weak shot from Kai Havertz put Arsenal ahead 2-0 in the first half, before Bukayo Saka and Jakob Kivuri scored two goals in the second to seal the three points before Joe Willock pulled a goal back for Newcastle.

Arsenal’s sixth consecutive league win this year raised the tally of coach Mikel Arteta’s third-placed team to 58 points from 26 matches, two points behind leaders Liverpool and one point behind Manchester City, which won earlier on Saturday 1-0 over Bournemouth.

Top scorer Havertz told TNT Sports: “It is important to win matches to maintain pressure (on Liverpool and Manchester City), and this is what we will do.”

“The fans gave us a lot of energy, which was very important for us. “It gave us a big boost.”

Arsenal opened the scoring in the 18th minute when the ball bounced off the knee of Newcastle defender Botman and into his goal by mistake after a scramble in front of the goal after goalkeeper Loris Karius blocked a wonderful header from Gabriel following a cross pass from a corner kick.

Six minutes later, the score became 2-0 when Havertz put the ball into the goal from the six-yard area after a pass from Gabriel Martinelli from the right side after a wonderful dropped pass from Jorginho left Newcastle’s defense exposed again.

Arsenal’s dominance was reflected in their possession of the ball in the first half, which amounted to 64 percent, with 12 scoring attempts, including four on goal, while Newcastle failed to send any shot in the first half in a Premier League match for the first time since March 2014.

Saka decided the match for the London club when he scored the third goal in the 65th minute to score his 13th league goal this season when he ran down the right side and entered the area to fire a shot into the far corner before Kivior scored from a header from a corner kick taken by Declan Rice to make the score 4-0.

Former Arsenal striker Willock scored Newcastle’s only goal with a diving header into the far corner of the goal in the 84th minute after a perfect cross pass from Dan Born, but after things became difficult for coach Eddie Howe’s team.

Arsenal have scored 15 goals in their last three Premier League matches, and the victory over Newcastle was the perfect response to a late 1-0 defeat at Porto after a disappointing display in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 last week.

Havertz added, “I think it was very important (to win) because it was a difficult match last Wednesday (in Portugal) and we wanted to win today – we performed well today.”

The defeat left Newcastle in eighth place with 37 points.

Coach Howe said: “Arsenal were very good, but we were not and we were punished.” “We were not good in most of our performance.”
