At high altitude with alpacas and llamas, in Rueglio excursions as in the Andes

by admin

In Valchiusella there is a reality that has been breeding them since 2016, seasonal tours from Sunday “They are docile animals that must be accompanied, trips to Palit and around the village”

RUEGLIO. We are not in the Andes but in Valchiusella, in Rueglio: Vallet Region, 700 meters above sea level. Alpacas and llamas have been raised in Alpatrek since 2016. Fifteen animals. Of these, nine are used to go trekking in the two ways “from morning to evening” destination Palit, or tour around the town for an hour and a half, maximum three. The demanding outings of the whole day (from 10 to 16) begin on Sunday 10 October, then there will be those of 24 October and 7 November. Eighteen seats per tour, sold out for all three dates. On Saturdays and Sundays, however, it is always possible to book the mini tours of Rueglio. “After Covid and the summer break in which it is better to leave them quiet, the animals, because they suffer from the heat, we have finally resumed the excursions. For the llamas and alpacas the good season is starting now, we will go on with the excursions until 20 centimeters of snow fall ». Massimiliano Ferretti, 51, is the owner of Alpatrek together with his wife Sara, a veterinarian. Both valchiusellasi.

«The idea of the breeding started from her – he says -. Sara had been working with llamas and alpacas for about ten years, since these animals began to spread also in the Canavese area. I was in a moment of professional transition, I wanted to turn the page. That’s how we got this far. A lot of people arrive: Lombardy, Liguria, Piedmont, hardly anyone from the Canavese area ». These peaceful, silent, docile and friendly four-legged friends, suitable for accompanying children from five years upwards. The excursions do not include mounts. “Llamas carry a maximum of 35 kilos, while alpacas are small, they are not suitable.” And then, in a small way, it is done as in Peru and Bolivia: given the right proportions, alpacas and llamas set out like pack animals, in the sense that during the excursions it is up to them to carry the snack in the pack. Bread, salami and cheeses from Valchiusella, of course. Hikers accompany them. «The animal is led with a rope, caressed, listened to. A slow and gentle trek, in short, in which even children over five years of age can participate ». For an excursion they range from 20 to 30 euros depending on the length of the route. «Valchiusella is perhaps less known than the neighboring valleys, but this very privacy is one of the reasons why this place is so loved by those who live there; our idea is to let you appreciate its splendid territory in a somewhat bizarre way, walking it through paths, mule tracks and woods, flanked by these docile creatures able to move easily, thanks to the type of foot that nature has given them to allow their survival on the inaccessible territories of the Andean highlands ».
