It took about ten hours to shed light on this morning’s shooting in via De Gasperi in Avola. In the evening, Gabriele Li Gioi, 39, (in the photo), assisted by the lawyer Nino Campisi, was transferred from the police station to the Cavadonna prison on charges of attempted murder.

The arrest was validated by the prosecutor, Gaetano Bono, who did not believe what Li Gioi allegedly said according to which it was self defense treaty. The wounded, Vincenzo Caruso, 33, arrested last March 4 by the carabinieri for having set fire to a car and the door of a commercial activity, was already free after serving a few days in house arrest, and albeit with a bullet to the thigh exploded by Li Gioi at the height of a fight, he signed to leave the “Di Maria” hospital where he was taken immediately after the shooting.

To discover the causes of the far west this morning were the agents of the mobile team of Syracuse together with the colleagues of the Commissariat of Avola. The motive is not for a story of honor, but for a car sold by Li Gioi to Caruso, through a car dealer from Ispica. According to what has been learned, Vincenzo Caruso would have felt cheated for that deal which, according to him, would have been a “fag”. Too much money for a car that was not in the condition that was instead described. After the purchase for Li Gioi, owner of a shop for coffee accessories in Avola and an external collaborator of the car dealer, the troubles would begin with a series of threats and intimidations.

It is the night between 3 and 4 March last when Caruso, after having filled two petrol cans, first sets fire to a car owned by Li Gioi and immediately afterwards heads towards the center of Avola, in the merchant’s shop. He piles up two tires in front of the shop, sprinkles them with gasoline and sets them on fire. Caruso, however, does not deal with a gazelle of the carabinieri of the Radiomobile of Noto. The military forces catch him red-handed and arrest him. Caruso ends up under house arrest, but is released after a few days. But the game between the two is not over and this morning the two meet in via De Gasperi and a fight arises. Caruso pulls out a hammer and hits his rival in some parts of the body, while Li Gioi takes out his gun and explodes a bullet in the leg. Caruso, despite bleeding, manages to disarm his rival and unloads the magazine from the pistol against Li Gioi’s Fiat Panda. The bullets pierce part of the front body and the windshield.

When the alarm is triggered on the spot, the police arrive, while the two contenders end up in the emergency room of Di Maria. Caruso refused hospitalization, while Li Gioi, after being medicated, ended up under interrogation in the police station. In the evening the prison doors opened for him. Both are old acquaintances of the police and carabinieri.
