Battiato, speaks the monk who will celebrate the funeral: “He had approached Christianity”

by admin

“A sincere and honest spiritual seeker, an artist who had made the search for the divine a life purpose.” Thus, Father Guidalberto Bormolini, monk and theologian, remembers his friend Franco Battiato on Vatican Radio, whose funeral he will celebrate in Sicily.

“Battiato – he explains – was deeply convinced that death represented a door to access a spiritual mystery of beauty and, in the last years of his life, he had come very close to Christianity”.

«For about eight years we had had a close, intense relationship of friendship and also of strong spiritual exchange. In particular, we had collaborated on the documentary “Traversando il Bardo”, dedicated to the meaning of death in Western and Eastern cultures, also having many public meetings to present it. But it is above all private friendship that has characterized our relationship “, says the monk.

For the priest Battiato «he was a” sincere “spiritual seeker. It’s not that common today. A sort of “do-it-yourself” spirituality is in fashion, a bit like a supermarket, while he has always been an honest and sincere spiritual seeker and sought the divine. He told me several times that some of his songs were born from a spiritual inspiration. Perhaps one of the most interesting is “The shadow of light”: he had just told me that it was born from a particular inspiration born during the meditation he was practicing. In recent times this spiritual research of his was increasingly open – I saw him mature so much – and his research was also very open to Christianity. He had grown fond of the great mystics, the Fathers of the desert. In one of his songs he said: “I want to pray again following the tenacity of the Desert Fathers”. I know that a mind and a heart as open as his were also open to the encounter with the mystery of Christ ”.

The religious specifies: «He was not a character that could be pigeonholed in a Church and this, to be honest, it must be said. But I think that was also the beauty of his personality: he was a free spirit. Among other things, he was a person of great sensitivity even off the stage ». “He was truly open to the spirit and, in my opinion, the meaning of his life, the center of his life, which he had chosen, was the search for the divine, for the encounter, through a very particular way of his own, he sought a personal divine “. “Obviously, given the character, he clearly kept his thinking a little anticlerical, a little anti-institutional. So I can say that he remained a free person, he died as a free person ”, concludes Father Bormolini in the interview with Vatican Radio.
