The book created by Elena Collazuol and Roberto Totaro. Padrin: “Fundamental awareness for the well-being of children and families”

BELLUNO. It was presented this morning at Palazzo Piloni “I am autistic, I’ll tell you what it means!”, A comic book on raising awareness on autism spectrum disorder created by Elena Collazuol (therapist of the neuro and psycho-motor skills of the developmental age) and the famous designer Roberto Totarowith the patronage of the Province of Belluno.

“I’m autistic, I’ll tell you what it means!” tells the adventures of Roby, a boy with autism spectrum disorder, who during his growth and during his days, meets a great variety of people in different contexts. There is a natural desire to communicate, but things don’t always work as they should: there is no lack of misunderstandings, misunderstandings and disappointments. Roby then explains, through Totaro’s enlightening skits and captivating illustrations, how things appear from his point of view, how it is possible to interact with him in the best possible way and of course have fun together.

«Comics are an extraordinarily effective means of transmitting information based on solid scientific evidence to a very large audience in an immediate way. In this way we want to reach schoolmates, peers, friends and all citizens to help improve the quality of life and relationships of people with autism and those who live with them in different contexts “explains Dr. Collazuol. «The text is accompanied by short scientific descriptions, the explanation of the project and the presentation of the support network that is gradually consolidating in our territory. In fact, the book is part of a series of actions launched in recent years in the province of Belluno to raise awareness in the community towards people with autism spectrum disorder. The need to spread the knowledge of the disorder arises from the most recent scientific discoveries. Researches around the world are finding that autism has a higher prevalence than could be recorded in the past: the most recent data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Epidemiology Program Office reports 1 case for every 68 children “.

The comic book will be presented to citizens next Friday, with a conference at 5.30 pm at the Giovanni XXIII Center. 21,000 copies have been printed, which will be distributed free of charge to all Belluno schools – from primary to high school – thanks also to the collaboration with the autism desk of the provincial school office.

“Our main activity is supporting teachers: we have teachers who have had experience with pupils with autism and give support to other teachers who ask for it” he explains Katia Barattin, contact person of the autism desk. “In addition, we organize training courses. A triple course for middle and high schools will start in April: Sport and Autism, Safety and Autism, Affectivity and Autism. The book by Elena Collazuol and Roberto Totaro is part of the good practices for inclusion and we will contribute to the widespread distribution in schools. Also because the autism spectrum disorder is increasingly widespread: from 2013 – when the counter was born – to date, the number of children and young people with autism has doubled in the province. This year we have 133 pupils with this disorder in our schools ».

“Raising awareness on the issue of autism is important, also for the well-being of those suffering from this disorder and of families” comments the president of the Province, Robert Padrin. «When Elena Collazuol told me how the project was born, I decided that we couldn’t not support it as a provincial body. In fact, the book was born from the outburst of a mother of a child with autism, who she felt judged in the park by another mother, frightened by the behavior of her little one. Knowing what a child or a boy with autism sees helps to understand and therefore to include ».
