Canoe stadium Ivrea, European armored vehicle “All closed, necessary sacrifice”

In the city already some athletes, a total of two hundred from thirty nations will arrive: “Due to Covid, maximum rigor is needed”

IVREA. As already anticipated for some time, the absolute European Canoe Slalom Championship scheduled from 6 to 9 May on the waters of the Dora Baltea will not be able to have the usual face, so familiar and dear to the Ivrea people.

No festive happenings on the banks of the river. No crowding at the Canoe Stadium, no collateral events to embellish the competition days, as is usually the case for these events.

Prudence and rigor

The health regulations impose prudence and rigor, the two pillars of the organization: «Sorry – explains Claudio Roviera, president of the Proteina association that takes care of the organization of the race -, but we cannot do otherwise. All aspects of our lives are conditioned by Covid and Europeans are no exception, on the contrary: since many nations are expected to attend and that the first objective is to protect the health of athletes, the safety regulations will be stringent and their mandatory respect “.

For years now, the interpretation of the regulations and the organizational adaptation have been a sword of Damocles that hangs over every event: “We first had to deal with the directives of the” Circular Gabrielli “relating to public order, dealing with the Police – Roviera analyzes -, now the news is represented by the health protocol, for which we have to deal with the ASL. A major contribution came to us from the university campus of Ivrea, in particular to the degree course in Nursing: their intermediary role was fundamental, also because they “speak the same language” as the health authority and this has greatly facilitated us in relationships “.

The presence of the university center, in addition to this preliminary phase, will also be “on the field”, on the days of the competition and in the days immediately preceding it: a series of swabs is provided for all athletes and members of the staff and organization, in so as to create a “bubble” that must remain sealed as much as possible, also because when the races on the Dora are held, there will be little more than two months to go to the Tokyo Olympic event and for an athlete the infection could have disastrous effects on the season. «We will do everything possible to pay the utmost attention – assures Roviera – even if the concern remains. The bad thing is that we have to fight a sneaky and invisible enemy, which greatly complicates the role of those who must control and prevent. Canoeing is a sport accustomed to dealing with small and large emergencies: I am thinking for example of rescue in the water, for which we have specialized and trained personnel, ready to intervene. But these are interventions in the face of a clear and tangible emergency, quite the opposite of what is represented by the pandemic we have to face ».

The army of athletes

Over 200 athletes from 30 nations will arrive in Ivrea. Some delegations are already in town for the tests on the race channel and this is attracting fans and onlookers to the balustrades overlooking the water of the Dora: «They are world-class athletes who are preparing the most important part of their season. This is why they are very careful not to take unnecessary risks. They arrive, train and go back to their quarters. If they don’t stop to say hello or “high five” as they could in the past, it is out of prudence, not because they are grumpy. On the other hand, let’s not forget that Ivrea, like the whole region, is in the red zone, so there shouldn’t be anyone at the stadium in these weeks ». As a consequence of this last reasoning, the organizers make a double appeal: to the people to avoid stationing in the stadium areas in compliance with the rules and to the authorities to supervise and discourage any “disobedient”. Especially on match days, the Stadium area will be armored: «We still don’t know what color Piedmont will be at the beginning of May, but in any case the whole area will be closed to the public, both the balustrade area and the playground. It is a sacrifice that we ask of everyone in respect of the general situation and of the athletes. For our part, we will apply the utmost rigor and we have already asked all those involved in the event to pay the utmost attention even in these weeks leading up to the races. We are sure that we will return to experience the canoe with the joy and participation we were used to, but this time we must take a step back and realize that the situation we are experiencing is not normal ». –
