UDINE. The urban art of Andrea Ravo Mattoni makes a stop in Udine. The Italian artist known throughout the world for his works created on the facades of buildings, reproducing classic masterpieces using the spray can, received a commission from the entrepreneur Angelo Casa.
These days Ravo is working in a courtyard in via Vittorio Veneto depicting Caravaggio’s “Vocation of San Matteo” on a wall nine meters high and eight wide. «My goal is to bring classical works of art to the streets, taking them out of museums to re-propose them to the general public – explains Ravo -. Art belongs to all of us. For me it is important to bring people closer to the works and then return them to museums and savor a heritage that is theirs, ours, everyone’s ».
Usually Ravo works on commission from institutions or museums, and always tries to link his representation to the territorial context. In the case of Udine, since it was a request from a private individual, this did not happen. But if he had the chance to return to the city, his dream would be to reproduce a work by Giambattista Tiepolo on a large scale. «He is one of my favorite 18th century painters – he admits -. If I had the chance to come back here, I would absolutely dedicate myself to Tiepolo, to let everyone know a piece of the artistic heritage of this city ». A wish that sounds like an appeal to city institutions.
