The consolidation of the piles reveals the need to intervene above. Administrations at work on alternative routes
BELLUNO. Alemagna takes on more and more the contours of a modern Via Crucis. If the open construction sites were not enough, for works necessary to make traffic flow more smoothly, a potentially explosive situation is on the horizon: the reconstruction of the road plan of the Castellavazzo bridge, with the closure of the infrastructure at least in one direction. It could happen in the spring of 2022, and the repercussions on traffic are already easily imaginable.
In recent weeks, work is underway to secure and consolidate the piles of the bridge, which can be used by two-way vehicles. The state road becomes one-way a few tens of meters later, towards Longarone: only those coming from Cadore can travel it, while those traveling north must use the alternative road network, through the fair and the sports facilities of Longarone. Queues are the order of the day.
THE DISCOVERY
Precisely during these works on the Castellavazzo bridge, included in the Anas plan to improve the road network along the State Road 51 prepared for the World Ski Championships, the company realized that it may also be necessary to redo the driveway plan of the infrastructure. “At the end of the pile consolidation works, an evaluation will be made and a decision will be made,” anticipates the President of the Province, Roberto Padrin. “It is certain that the eventual closure of the bridge opens up a complex scenario for the road network to and from Cadore and Comelico”.
HYPOTHESIS ON THE TABLE
Padrin is already discussing it with Anas. A solution must be found immediately, because if the bridge closes there is a risk of creating a hellish plug on the Alemagna. One of the hypotheses put on the table was to divert the vehicles coming from Cadore towards the center of Castellavazzo, accessing the town from the level crossing area, but this solution has already been discarded: “It is not practicable,” confesses Padrin. “We can’t think of having trucks in the middle of the country.”
The alternative is to establish an alternating one-way street, with the movieri to make the traffic flow, but even this solution risks throwing the roads into a tailspin and giving rise to long queues. “It will not be an easy situation to manage”, continues Padrin, “but we are ready to identify the best possible solution, should it really be necessary to intervene also on the driveway of the bridge”. It will be known at the end of the year, when Anas will finish the consolidation and safety works of the infrastructure.
THE OPEN SITES
Meanwhile, work in the Castellavazzo area is continuing. «We are going ahead with the correction of the curves», explains Padrin, «two viaducts are completed and awaiting testing, for the other two sections of the intervention it will take a few more weeks».
After Ferragosto, work will also resume in via Uberti, which must be completed after the interruption due to some problems with the winning company. “There will be no repercussions on traffic because the road will remain open,” says Padrin.
Work is also underway between the Longarone station and via Uberti, where the construction of sidewalks, two pedestrian underpasses and an intervention on the railway bridge are planned. It is the construction site that forces motorists heading to Cadore to detour to the fair and the sports facilities of Longarone: the road network will remain like this until the end of the year, because it still takes time to complete the works. Then the situation should normalize. Unless it is necessary to close the Castellavazzo bridge. At that point, for those who will have to travel on the Alemagna, it could become a spring of passion.
