Cencenighe, young hikers in difficulty due to rain and snow recovered by the Alpine Rescue

The two Venetian friends wanted to camp in Col Mandro, they called 118 geolocating

Yesterday evening around 21.20 the Centrale del Suem alerted the Alpine Rescue of Val Biois, for two hikers in difficulty along the path that leads to the Col Mandro bivouac, 1,850 meters above sea level, on Monte Alto di Pelsa. The two friends, 21 years old from Pianiga (Venice), had left with backpacks, sleeping bags and food at around 4 pm from Colaz (900 meters above sea level, a hamlet of Cencenighe Agordino) with the intention of spending the night in the bivouac.

Arriving at about 1,750 meters above sea level, slowed down by the presence of snow as they wore trail shoes and by having lost the track, in the pouring rain they decided to stop in the shelter of an overhanging rock and contacted 118. Continuing they would have found further difficulties given the presence of an aided section.

Going up to the coordinates of the point where they were thanks to the geolocation application supplied by the Alpine Rescue, a team left Colaz and reached them in the rain at midnight. Since the four rescuers – plus one at the base for communications – had crossed steep snow-covered canals that were more risky to tackle on the descent, it was decided to return from the safer and more accessible route that leads to Avoscan. Held and helped in the slippery sections, also caused by roots and soaked leaves, the two boys were taken back to the valley and then taken to their car, where they arrived at 2.30am.

Yesterday there was a weather and snow warning up to 1,400 meters, then fortunately no more descent. The advice is always to always consult the weather reports before each excursion. At high altitude there is still a consistent presence of snow and consequently appropriate footwear and equipment are required.
