Chiara Francini: “On stage between Shakespeare and research theater”

by admin

Books, cinema, television, theater. Chiara Francini is a volcano of energy. In his vocabulary there are no words pause, rest. So much so that when the green light was given to the resumption of live events, she did not return to the scene with only one show, but with two. And now with “The secret love of Ofelia” he lands at Cedac’s Night of the Poets: the appointment is for Saturday 10 July at 8 pm in the archaeological area of Nora. But the Tuscan actress from Campi Bisenzio will also take advantage of the Sardinian stage to present her novel, “The starry sky is purring”, published by Rizzoli, which, like the previous ones, won the bet of the bookstores. And so on the 11th it will be in Santa Lucia di Siniscola, on the 12th in Olbia and on the 13th in Macomer. A mini tour on an island that has always been close to her heart: her best friend, Mara Tanchis, is from Bolotana, while in Porto Rotondo there is Paolo Isoni, a trusted friend and designer, who also created the costumes for the show. And Sardinia also had a certain influence in the drafting of the last novel, so much so that an ad hoc chapter was dedicated to it.

The first appointment with his island tour will however be with the theater on July 10 in Nora in the Night of the poets by Cedac, now in its 39th edition, in a play signed by Steven Berkoff. Francini plays an actress who has to play Ophelia, while the other protagonist, Andrea Argentieri, has the role of an actor who has to play Hamlet.

A show within a show, then?

“Absolutely yes. The story derives from the erotic correspondence of Ophelia and Hamlet which is only quoted in Shakespeare’s work, but which Berkoff returns to us. It is a staging in which the actress when she sees what her partner will be is not happy, she doesn’t like it. But then as rehearsals go on, as Ophelia falls in love with Hamlet, she falls in love with the actor. The fate of four characters becomes the fate of two ».

The show was born from a text by Berkoff, but there is also Shakespeare. Two different eras and two different languages?

«The story starts from the lockdown, there are two screens where we rehearse and then we are in flesh and blood on the stage where we stage the tragedy. Fanny and Alexander, alias Chiara Lagani and Luigi De Anggelis, who have handled direction and dramaturgy, have chosen a language that encompasses the two spheres: there is the present with the rehearsals, there is the tragedy of Shakespeare ».

How did you come across this text by Berkoff?

“It was my producer, Pierfrancesco Pisani, who found him. I come from the research theater and for me it is a sort of return to origins. I have the opportunity to stage a popular show but with the veins of research. This piece allows me to bring to my origins a benefit of popularity that I have gained over the years ».

The theme is adolescent love, those impulses that are felt only at that age.

«No, love is an eternal state. Even at 50, when you are overwhelmed by passion, you lose the brakes. Love happens to you. It is characterized by a lack of control, especially in the first stage. Passion is like faith: it goes beyond rationality. And it’s a stuff that can go good, bad or badly. “

What was it like to return to the scene after the pandemic?

«I am very happy of it. I write and act out of the desire for love towards other living beings. As I always say: cinema and TV are love calls, theater and books are hugs. For me it is a return to see the stars again ».

Vaccinated?

«Not yet, there was only J&J, which is not good for me. I hope to do it as soon as possible, because getting vaccinated is essential ».

After Nora she will go up to Sardinia to present “The starry sky purrs”: this book also went well.

“The novel of the summer has already been crowned. It is a sort of Decameron, many short stories that can be read, left and resumed. It is a novel that for the multiplicity of stories, for the structure and for its narrator Rollone (the actress’s cat, ed) gave me so much joy. It is a book that has made us embrace in these months when we could not touch. And then there is a lot of Sardinia ».

The best judgment?

«That of Stefania Massari of Huffington post:“ Chiara Francini has been able to give us a wonderful and poetic book to keep close to the heart, because it is capable of transforming tears into laughter ”».

In the autumn he will be at the cinema with Mario Sesti’s “Altri fathers”.

«A very beautiful, current film. Talk about the end of a love when there is a family, children. It is a film of rare power ».

And she will have a dramatic role: easier to make people laugh or cry?

“For an actress the hardest thing is to be true, but I think it’s harder to make people laugh.”

What if they called you for the next edition of “Lol”, this year’s TV phenomenon?

“Why not? It could be an idea”.
