Chief of the Southern Command warns in Guatemala about attempts at regional destabilization

US Southern Command General Warns of Threat Posed by Criminal Organizations in Central America

The head of the United States Southern Command, General Laura Richardson, issued a warning during her visit to Guatemala about the threat posed by different criminal organizations internationally, in their attempt to destabilize the region.

“Transnational criminal organizations seek to detonate regional instability, exacerbating violence and corruption,” said Richardson, who is currently in Guatemala for a four-day visit focused on bilateral relations and joint security work.

Richardson is also attending the Central American Security Conference (CENTSEC), where defense and public security leaders from the Americas and Europe are discussing regional collaborative efforts to address security challenges in the 21st century.

During the conference, Minister Sáenz of Guatemala highlighted that the threat posed by these criminal organizations worries not only Guatemala and the US, but all of Central America.

“Environmental security and other factors that cause poverty, migration, discrimination, and lack of opportunities for development for the vast majority of our populations throughout the region are threatened,” said Sáenz.

In order to confront these threats, Sáenz emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach and utilizing all available resources to protect against these criminal organizations.

Although specific groups or organizations were not mentioned by Richardson or Sáenz, the US Department of the Treasury has designated organizations such as the Kinahan Organized Crime Group, Abid Ali Khan, and the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) for sanctions.

“The criminal organizations subject the people of this region to extortion, robbery, sexual violence and many other dangers,” Richardson asserted.

The Central American Security Conference aims to address these security challenges and create strategies for protecting the region against the threats posed by transnational criminal organizations.
