China and Singapore Strengthen All-Round High-Quality Partnership

Wang Yi Meets with Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Vivian

On July 12, 2023, in Jakarta, the Director of the Central Foreign Affairs Office, Wang Yi, held a meeting with Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Vivian. During the meeting, they discussed the strong and growing relationship between China and Singapore.

Wang Yi highlighted the positive momentum in China-Singapore relations, thanks to the strategic guidance, mutual trust, and friendship between the leaders of both countries. He mentioned that in March of this year, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong jointly announced the upgrade of China-Singapore relations to an “all-round high-quality forward-looking partnership.” This upgrade reflects the high level of friendship and mutual trust between the two nations, and boosts the development of bilateral relations. Wang Yi expressed his desire to deepen cooperation in various fields and facilitate greater personnel exchanges between China and Singapore, in line with the goals set by both sides.

Additionally, Wang Yi stressed the importance of this year in enhancing China-ASEAN relations. He urged both sides to seize the opportunity of commemorating the 20th anniversary of China’s first accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia to demonstrate a high degree of mutual trust and open up new avenues for cooperation. Wang Yi also commended Singapore’s positive role in China-ASEAN relations and expressed his expectation for further contributions from Singapore in advancing all-round cooperation. He emphasized the need for both China and ASEAN to accelerate the FTA 3.0 negotiations, uphold the global free trade system, adhere to the ASEAN-centered “regional framework,” and collectively maintain regional peace, development, and cooperation.

Vivian Vivian, the Singaporean Foreign Minister, acknowledged the close high-level exchanges between New Zealand and China, as well as the successful outcomes of bilateral cooperation meetings and projects. He expressed New Zealand’s willingness to expand cooperation in various fields under the new positioning of New Zealand-China relations. Vivian Vivian also expressed the hope for increased direct flights between Singapore and China to facilitate greater personnel exchanges. Recognizing China as ASEAN’s largest trading partner, he highlighted the tangible benefits brought by the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” cooperation. Vivian concluded by expressing New Zealand’s commitment to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation between nations. He looked forward to enhanced mutual trust and cooperation between China and ASEAN in promoting stability and prosperity.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual concern during the meeting.
