China has provided 10,000 doses of vaccine to the rebels in Kachin State of Myanmar in an attempt to curb the spread of the local coronavirus pneumonia epidemic. A spokesman for the Kachin State rebels entrenched in northern Myanmar said that part of the 10,000 coronavirus vaccines China provided them was donated.

Rebels in the Kachin State of Myanmar are active on the south side of the China-Myanmar border. According to a message sent by AFP from Bangkok on July 26, the Beijing authorities are seeking to curb the spread of the new coronavirus in Myanmar into China.

Myanmar has been in chaos since the military launched a coup in February to seize power. The recent surge in confirmed cases in Myanmar has deeply disturbed the Chinese authorities across the border. The local coronavirus began to spread rapidly in July this year, but because Myanmar medical staff participated in the “civil disobedience movement”, many hospitals were seriously short of medical staff.

A spokesperson for the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), which has been carrying out a decades-long rebellion in northern Myanmar, told AFP that they have received 10,000 doses of vaccine from the Yunnan authorities.

The spokesperson said: We have asked China to assist with vaccines, and China will provide vaccines to help us. However, he did not specify the brand of the vaccine provided by China and when the first batch of vaccines will arrive. He only said that some of the vaccines China has provided to them have already paid the price, while other vaccines are donations.

Earlier this month, Beijing reported 57 new infections across the country-the highest number of days since late January-including 15 cases in Ruili, a city adjacent to Myanmar. According to the Yunnan Provincial Health Authority, of the 15 cases in Ruili, 12 are Myanmar nationals.

Last Thursday, a batch of 736,000 doses of vaccines donated by China National Pharmaceutical Group also arrived in Yangon. Myanmar officials said that residents on the border with China will be given priority for vaccination.

Agence France-Presse said that Beijing enjoys special influence over Myanmar. So far, Beijing has refused to call the Burmese military’s overthrow of Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratically elected regime a coup.

According to observers, Beijing also maintains an alliance with ethnic minority armed militias along the long Chinese border, which have been fighting the Burmese army for decades.

Since the coup in February this year, the Kachin Independence Army and government forces have fought sporadic battles. In May of this year, the Myanmar military carried out an air strike against the organization. The organization later told AFP that it shot down a government helicopter gunship during the fierce clashes in the northernmost part of Myanmar.
