The National Bureau of Statistics of China announced on Monday (January 17) that the number of births in China in 2021 will be 10.62 million, and the birth rate will further drop to 7.52‰.

After deducting the number of deaths, China’s total population increased by only 480,000 compared with the end of the previous year, and the natural population growth rate was as low as 0.34‰.

In the past few years, discussions about “aging” and “low birthrate” have been rampant in China, and “population anxiety” has been accumulating. But the just-released last year’s population data surprised many experts.

Some analysts pointed out that how to deal with the rapid and early arrival of the era of “zero population growth” or even “negative growth” has become an unavoidable problem for China.
