[Epoch Times October 27, 2021](Epoch Times reporter Li Jing comprehensive report) Recently, the phenomenon of “food is more expensive than meat” has appeared in many parts of China. According to reports, vegetable prices have generally risen sharply, mainly due to supply shortages caused by multiple factors such as cold weather, flood conditions, and rising prices of production materials.

According to monitoring by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, since October, the average price of 19 kinds of vegetables in 286 wholesale markets across the country has risen by 27%.

“Beijing Youth Daily” reported on October 26 that when the price of vegetables was the most expensive this round, the price of spinach per catty was as high as 17.6 yuan (RMB, the same below). In the same supermarket, one catty of spinach can buy two catties of pork or three catties of chicken, which has become a hot spot for many netizens.

Vegetable transaction data in the Jiangnan market show that in the past week, the vegetables with a large increase in vegetable prices in the Jiangnan market include Pugua, eggplant, and cabbage heart, which increased by 60%, 60%, and 56.8% respectively from the previous week.

Recently, a reporter from the “Guangzhou Daily” visited some supermarkets and farmer’s markets in Guangzhou. Compared with before the “Eleventh” period, the “worth” of many vegetables has doubled. “Starting from the middle of this month, the price of vegetables is one price per day, and melons and leafy vegetables have risen a lot.” Director Liu of Shengjia Supermarket’s Fresh Food Purchasing Department said.

At the Baishazhou Agricultural and Sideline Products Market in Wuhan City, Hubei, the largest farmer’s distribution center in Central China, Cao Yanzhou, who mainly sells vegetables from other places, said that since mid-September this year, cucumbers produced in greenhouses in Shandong have been rising all the way. The cucumber has now risen to four or five yuan a catty.

In addition to cucumbers from Shandong, the price of white radish from Hebei has also doubled in the past month.

In the vegetable market in Yueqing, Zhejiang, the prices of common vegetables such as snow peas and okra have been more than 10 yuan per catty in the past two days, which is a lot higher than the previous period.

In farmers’ markets in Hangzhou, Zhoushan and other places, vegetable prices have generally risen. Many business households say that the purchase price of some leafy vegetables has doubled from a week ago.

Judging from the recent price trend chart of Beijing Xinfadi Market, vegetable prices have shown a continuous upward trend since October. Among them, green leafy vegetables such as spinach have risen rapidly.

Ms. Zeng, a salesperson at a supermarket in Beijing, said that some vegetables are sold at high prices and no one buys them, and the loss is high, so stocks have been reduced.

Behind the soaring vegetable prices

A reporter from the “Red Star Capital Bureau” under the “Chengdu Commercial Daily” recently visited a number of vegetable wholesale markets and supermarkets and found that excluding seasonal factors, the prices of many vegetables have risen sharply, mainly due to supply shortages caused by cold weather and floods.

In a farmer’s market, the most expensive vegetable varieties are chives, snow peas, pea tips, and spinach, which cost 20 yuan, 15 yuan, 14 yuan, and 15 yuan per catty, respectively. Moreover, some vegetable stalls do not sell the above-mentioned varieties because they are too expensive.

Since the week of September 19, the weekly index of Shandong Shouguang Vegetable Price Index, known as the “Barometer of Vegetable Prices in China,” has risen for four consecutive weeks. The weekly price index on October 24 showed that the fixed-base index of vegetable prices in Shouguang Dili Agricultural Products Logistics Park this week rose 16.9% month-on-month and 56.3% year-on-year.

The person in charge of Yonghui Supermarket said that the daily fresh vegetables in the supermarket mainly come from Yunnan, Shandong and the local surroundings. Vegetables in Yunnan suffered losses in previous years, and this year’s reduction in planting area led to short supply; vegetables in Shouguang, Shandong were affected by continuous rains in the production area from late September to mid-October.

According to reports, cauliflower mainly comes from Gansu, and the wholesale price is 4 yuan per catty. Due to the cliff-style cooling in the north this year, it was originally possible to harvest several hundred tons of cauliflower in October, and the output was very small. The Yunnan cauliflower, which has changed seasons, is not yet on the market; the price of cucumbers has risen because of heavy rains and floods in the main producing areas of Henan and Shandong; the price of carrots has risen because of floods in the main producing area of Dali in Shanxi some time ago.

Since the beginning of this year, the prices of production materials such as seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides have risen, driving up the cost of vegetable cultivation. Oil prices have also continued to rise. In September, gasoline and diesel prices rose by 23.4% and 25.7% respectively. Dishes that travel farther away, such as green onions, Chinese cabbage, and long beans, have increased significantly due to the increase in logistics costs. In addition, labor costs have also continued to rise.

Chen Mingjun, executive vice president of the China Vegetable Circulation Association, said that Henan, Shandong, and Hebei are the top five provinces in China for vegetable production. According to the vegetable season, October is the time when vegetables from these three provinces are concentrated on the market. The above-mentioned three provinces have suffered severe floods before, and vegetable production has fallen sharply. The high weight of their national supply in October directly affected the national vegetable prices.

In addition to the severe floods in Henan, Shandong, and Hebei, Shanxi, a major vegetable producer, also suffered floods some time ago.
