Cortina, VIP mobilization to save the Country tennis club

The newborn spontaneous committee collects subscriptions and goes to the mayor, Sacconi, Donazzan and Amoruso also sign. The fate of the fields is closely linked to the remaking of the bobsled track. The testimonies of Patrese and Volandri

CORTINA. Accompanied by the presence that certainly did not go unnoticed in the center of six girls with rackets in hand, it began with the hand delivery of a letter to the mayor of Cortina, Gianpietro Ghedina, the activity of the newborn spontaneous committee “Salviamo il Country “. In the letter, the Administration is asked what it wants to do with the Sopiazes tennis courts now that the bobsleigh track project is at stake.

“We want the Tennis Country not to be paved,” he said yesterday Vittorio Pesato, spokesman for the committee, taking up the words of a member of the Cortina administration towards the Country: words that are obviously not liked by the club members. Pesato officially presented the birth of the spontaneous committee just after the inauguration of the Savoia Cup, the tennis tournament that takes place precisely on the fields of the Country and which sees famous personalities from the world of sports and television compete against each other.

“In four days we have collected 300 memberships, including those of many famous people who have been coming to Cortina to play tennis for many years”. A few names: Jimmy Ghione e Moreno Morello of “Strip the news”; the former minister of labor Maurizio Sacconi; the regional councilor Elena Donazzan; the former Juventus player Nicola Amoruso, just to name a few.

«We say no to the concrete casting in Sopiazes and ask for respect for tennis. We would like to understand this project, as long as there is a project on the bobsleigh track; otherwise we are talking about fried air ». The spirit with which the members of the committee went to the mayor yesterday is combative, but constructive: «Cortina is skiing but also other sports. There will be the Olympics, but that does not mean that tennis should disappear. I am from Asti and I have been playing Country since 2006. I love this structure and this splendid setting. In this circle you meet people of the highest level and you will always find a partner of your level or stronger to improve. I find the joke “we will asphalter you” by a representative of the institutions really unhappy. All sports can coexist ».

“I thank everyone for the warmth and friendship you are showing me,” he said Paola Bergamo, president of the Tennis Country, «we believe we have played a social role in these years of management. We are open 365 days a year; we started a federal school. We therefore need a multiannual planning. We educate young people in sport. We would like to continue to do so ».

The regional councilor Elena Donazzan also joined the committee, present yesterday at the inauguration in Cortina, and then she too went to the municipality to deliver the letter to the mayor.

«I joined the committee as a simple citizen», she said, «as administrator I will act as guarantor between the parties. The Region in the drafting of the project must comply with the requests of the IOC. The track with its peculiarities is designed by the IOC, which also gives indications of environmental, social and economic sustainability. The construction of the bobsled run must comply with these requests. Then everyone must do theirs: the Region is the guarantor between Coni, the Municipality and the Region with a surety and cannot change the indications of the IOC. Urban planning and authorizations are the responsibility of the Municipality, which will also have to guarantee the survival of tennis ».

THE TESTIMONIALS OF PATRESE AND VOLANDRI
“I have always played on these fields and I would like to continue to do so.” Words and music from the former F1 driver Riccardo Patrese. «I have been coming to this splendid place since I was twelve and for me Cortina has always been the theme of the holidays. It is a pity that we have to fight over sport, which should instead be sharing. The activity of the Country must continue because it is of great quality; it has the only covered structure within a radius of thirty kilometers and today it is able to propose an event such as an ATP tournament. I push so that a solution to the problem can be found all together. Bob and tennis have been living together for 50 years and must continue to do so; but when politics comes into play, unfortunately it often happens that everything gets complicated ».

A tennis star can only take the side of the future of tennis in Cortina. It is the case of Filippo Volandri, accustomed to the fields of the Country. “I think I’m the only one to have participated in all editions of the Savoia Cup,” said the former athlete, now captain of the Davis Cup.

«Here you can breathe an air of home and a great passion for sport. It would be an unforgivable crime to lose this little gem which represents a point of reference not only for those who come to Cortina as a tourist but above all for the residents. The activity carried out in recent years by Paola and Andrea deserves respect and applause because it is the fruit of passion. All those who gravitate around the Country exude passion. Above all for this reason they deserve trust ».
