Government criticized, 3.4 million doses behind plan

(ANSA) – ROME, MARCH 31 – Australia is 85% behind on its anti-Covid vaccination plan which provided for the administration of 4 million doses by March 31. One figure, reports the BBC. which comes two days after the announcement of a new lockdown in Brisbane due to a local outbreak caused by a doctor and a nurse from the same hospital who had not yet been vaccinated.

The campaign in Australia began on February 22 with the administration of only two vaccines, Pfizer and AstraZeneca.

The government’s goal in January was to vaccinate 4 million people by March and the entire population, 25 million people, by October. A few weeks ago Prime Minister Scott Morrison was forced to admit the delays and move the 4 million target to April. The Labor opposition accuses the prime minister of underestimating the importance of the vaccination campaign. “Morrison is always good at announcing but poor at delivering, said Labor chief Anthony Albanese.

The government did not explain the reasons for the delay. On the one hand problems in the booking system, on the other the refusal of many to be vaccinated. Natural disasters such as the recent floods have certainly had a bearing. On the other hand, the block on the export of 250,000 doses of AstraZeneca decided by the EU does not seem to have affected.
