“The Delta variant is more transmissible than other circulating variants and we estimate that by the end of August it will represent 90% of all Sars-Cov-2 viruses circulating in the European Union.” To put it in black and white is the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (Ecdc) in an updated opinion on the risk of Covid variants based on the scientific evidence available at the moment.
According to the director of the ECDC, Andrea Ammon, “Unfortunately, preliminary data show” that the Delta variant “can also infect individuals who have received only one dose of the currently available vaccines“. Adding: “It is very likely that the Delta variant will circulate widely during the summer, particularly among younger individuals who are not vaccinated, which could cause a risk” for those who are not fully vaccinated. “It is very important – notes Ammon – to progress with the vaccination campaign at a fast pace” with the second dose to be administered “within the minimum interval”, to speed up the time. “I am aware – concludes Ammon – that a significant effort on the part of public health authorities and society in general is required to achieve this goal. But now is the time to do everything possible”.
