covid, piedmont. Vaccines for over 50s, flop obligation: still 230,000 without protection

TURIN. Boom of positives, but numbers in decline as regards mortality and hospitalizations: in intensive care as in ordinary hospital wards.

It is the summary of the comparison made by the Region between the last week in the fourth wave in Piedmont (10-16 January 2022) and the peak week in the second wave (9-15 November 2020). The demonstration, if there was still a need, of the importance of vaccines, administered only starting from 27 December 2020: which vaccines do not exclude the possibility of getting infected – especially if, as in the present, one can live an almost normal existence even in the face of a hyper-contagious variant such as Omicron – but they prevent the most serious forms of Covid. Which is substantial.

The premise is a must to correctly interpret the data processed yesterday. Specifically, the 96,882 positives of the peak week of 2022 compared to the 27,686 of the peak week of 2020.

As for deaths, with reference to the same periods of the same years, we went from 417 to 126. Intensive care (average occupation per day): from 344 to 145 hospitalizations. Ordinary wards: from 4,799 to 1,929 hospitalizations.

Not surprisingly, the Region – attentive to the first, imperceptible signs of a slowdown in the epidemic curve but not determined to let its guard down – continues to administer vaccines. And before that, to recommend them. Yesterday in Piedmont 39,894 people were immunized (Sunday figure, down from over 55,000 on Saturday): 4,539 the first doses, 1,832 the second, 33,523 the third. Since the start of the campaign, 8.6 million doses have been injected, of which 3.1 million as second and 1.9 as third.

One front in itself is that of home administration. Remaining in Turin, and according to the data provided by the local ASL, 6,000 have been vaccinated with first and second doses, 4,000 have already received the booster (the rest within a month).

Still on the subject of vaccines, almost ten days after the entry into force of the vaccination obligation for people over 50 set by the government and started on January 8), it is possible to draw the first sums: 11,500 the first doses administered since that date. In all, the Region explains, at the moment almost 1,938,000 over 50s have received the first dose out of a total population of about 2,166,000 people who are over 50 years old in Piedmont (90%).

On the epidemic front, yesterday the data of the infections were contained: 8,857 new cases (of which 7,713 after antigen tests), equal to 14.8% of 60,004 swabs performed, of which 50,759 antigenic: of the 8,857 new cases the asymptomatic are 7,157 ( 80.8%). For the record, on Saturday there were 14,350 cases, equal to 13.5% of 106,488 swabs performed, of which 93,324 antigenic. In short: fewer cases detected in the face of fewer swabs performed, a dynamic now habitual on weekends.

As for hospitalizations, yesterday they were counted – 3 in intensive care (compared to Saturday) and +78 in the ordinary wards. Overall, there are 143 hospitalized in intensive care units, 2,016 in the other hospital wards. On the second front, it is difficult to understand how we went from + 8 admissions on Saturday to + 78 yesterday: it is likely that the surge from day to day depends on the delay in loading data.

Almost 170 thousand (165,136) Piedmontese in home isolation. The number of deaths remains high: Saturday 22 (8 of the day), yesterday 23 (5 of the day). In this case, there are no doubts: it is the Region itself to specify that the cumulative updated data communicated daily also includes deaths that occurred in the previous days and only subsequently ascertained as Covid deaths. The total becomes 12,291 deaths in Piedmont who tested positive for the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. –
