The Palio di Siena of 2 July canceled due to the anti-Covid measures still in force. Perhaps even the ‘career’ of August 16. The city council decided it this afternoon. It is necessary “to take note of the state of health emergency and consequently cancel the Career of July 2, 2021″, affirms the city assembly in a resolution and “to give a mandate to the mayor Luigi De Mossi” given the persistence or further negative evolution of the situation of the health emergency, after consultation with the public security authorities, to also cancel the Palio of 16 August “.
Careers canceled also in 2020
Also in 2020 the two careers of the Palio di Siena were not disputed due to Covid. In its history, the Palio di Siena was not only run on the occasion of extraordinary events. The first time on 16 August 1723 for the death of Grand Duke Ferdinand II of Tuscany, another in 1855 both careers were canceled due to a cholera epidemic. Then, in more recent times, the Palios did not run in 1940 and 1944 due to the Second World War. The decision to cancel the usual date of 2 July (Palio della Madonna di Provenzano) was taken with the vote of the city council on the amendment proposed by the mayor Luigi De Mossi. The majority was in favor, while the PD group left the classroom at the time of the vote.

The August Palio is pending
Regarding the Palio of August 16, for the Madonna dell’Assunta, the Municipality will wait for the last available moment to decide whether to play it or not. “In the talks this morning – the mayor Luigi De Mossi said in the classroom, referring to the meeting with the prefect Maria Forte and the commissioner Costantino Capuano – it emerged that there is no certainty about the conduct of the Palio in the usual forms. The window is still open for August because, on July 31 with the expiry of the state of emergency, there may be some changes. There is an objective difficulty in being able to carry it out but we want to keep all doors open to celebrate the party ”.
